Fun Facts
I'm a student in Santa Barbara, California, but I'm from Rochester, New York. I'm researching, traveling, and working internationally while also tutoring online.
About Me
I'm Jacob from Rochester, New York, and when I was 18, I moved across the US to Santa Barbara, California. I'm a sociology major at Santa Barbara City College and am planning on transferring to UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara or UCLA next year. Last spring, I studied abroad at Kyoto University in Kyoto, Japan. I'm also doing early pilot research for my eventual PhD abroad.
Experience
I've worked for disenfranchised and underserved students primarily. I work for Disability Services and Programs for Students at Santa Barbara City College, where I've worked as a notetaker and tutor for college students of all ages with mental and physical needs. I've also volunteered abroad with organisations like The Excellence Center- Engage In Palestine in Hebron and at the Hadab Al Fawwar refugee camp in the West Bank of Palestine as an English and general studies teacher.
Approach
American middle and high school is not focused on allowing students to reach their full potential. I struggled a lot myself when I was younger and had an IEP myself. Since high school, though I've grown as a student and now as an educator, I've followed what I genuinely care about and am interested in. I understand the stigma against specialized education as I've lived through it. My job is to help students follow what they're genuine interests even if American education won't do that for them.
