Fun Facts

I am bilingual and currently working on my third language, Hebrew! I began learning Spanish through my 8th grade teacher who used the TPR (total physical response) method based on how we naturally learn languages. I stayed up almost every night to study the details of Spanish and immerse myself as much as possible in the culture and language through music, television and neighbors. So, within a year, I was fluent!

About Me

I am currently a student at Florida State University majoring in Spanish and minoring in Hispanic Marketing Communications and Hebrew. I have a passion for projecting the voices of those who are unheard or cannot communicate effectively because of language barriers or other circumstances. Therefore, I can best serve others with my communication skills by becoming an immigration lawyer or international lawyer.

Experience

On countless occasions I have tutored generations of students that came behind me upon leaving my middle school for high school. Also, especially within the Spanish department, classmates would come to me with confusion about the subject matter and I would help them study and understand the material through live examples, metaphors, and depictions so that they have more than one way to retain the new information.

Approach

Whenever I'd have trouble in school, it was typically due to not enough time spent on the subject or I misunderstood the material (and thus did not know to ask about what I misunderstood!). Often times I find myself in a rush to just get the school work done. However, the material does not stick in the brain that way. I have to give my brain a reason to remember by slowing down, rephrasing/summarizing the material and/or representing it in pictorial/graphic form.

Spanish I Tutoring

As a part of being a Spanish major it is important for me to have a thorough understanding of the language: oral, written, auditory, and reading comprehension. I have demonstrated these skills specifically my SPN 3300: Grammar and Composition course. I passed this mandatory course with an A, consistently getting the one of the top if not the top scores on all of the exams. This is important because during the beginning stages of Spanish, vocabulary, common phrases and basic grammar are typically the focus of the course and need to be thoroughly mastered before moving on.

Writing Tutoring

Writing plays a leading role in being a Spanish major; anywhere between 2-4 papers and/or proposals are written in each course. Though most of my writing is done in Spanish, mastery of writing in a foreign language requires mastery in one's first language. My freshmen year at Boston University, I took RH101 and RH102, both rhetoric/writing courses. The first semester I passed with a B+. Upon working with my professor, I was able to learn how to express my ideas clearly and concisely, improving my grade from a B+ to an A-.

Algebra Tutoring

Though I am a Spanish major going into the legal field, I was initially a Spanish major on the pre-med track. My first semester of college at Boston University, I took college level calculus MA121 receiving an A in the class. Upon arriving at Florida Sate, I also took STA 1013: Statistics through example, also receiving an A in that course. The skill that makes me great at languages is the same skill that helped me to excel in math: treating both like the puzzles that they are! Once you realize how the "pieces" fit together, it's hard to go wrong.
