Fun Facts

My main hobbies involve music and the visual arts. This includes playing the piano, constantly discovering new bands to enjoy, drawing, painting, photography, and origami. I have a great interest in foreign cultures, and I explore this interest by volunteering as a conversation partner for international students at my school and by studying languages (mainly French and Dutch) on my own. I also enjoy taking walks, reading, and just relaxing at the television.

About Me

I am a thoughtful and determined girl who appreciates a good sense of humor. Being brought up in a home with parents and siblings who realized the importance of education and perseverance has formed the work ethic that has allowed me to excel in and out of the classroom. My passion for caring for people and my love of children have led me to work towards a career in pediatric medicine. In the meantime, I take every opportunity possible to help my community and be a mentor to others.
I have been unofficially richmond">tutoring my peers since I was in elementary school, but my first official experiences were in high school. Being a member of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society allowed me to richmond">tutor other students in math, and I was also paid to personally richmond">tutor a younger student outside of school. During my years at VCU, I have been a conversation partner to international students, which has been a bit of an English richmond">tutoring experience. This year (2012), I volunteered for a summer camp in a low-income area of Richmond, where my duties included richmond">tutoring as well as mentoring and leading arts and crafts. I am presently a mentor for a 4th grade girl, and I richmond">tutor her in whatever subject her current work comprises.
Instead of immediately presenting the answers to my mentees and those whom I have tutored, I tend to give them the clues and alternative perspectives that will lead them to finding the answers for themselves. I believe that this approach leads to better understanding of the material at hand, better memorization of the techniques that can be applied in future situations, and a better grasp of the critical thinking needed to complete other assignments that are seemingly unrelated. The work of a richmond">tutor seems to be successful not when the student can simply regurgitate answers, but when the student can solve new problems on his or her own, using the assistance that the richmond">tutor has provided.
