Fun Facts

I love language - for me, music and math are different kinds of languages. I have played four instruments (including the steel drums). I am originally from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and have lived in New Orleans since 2011. My favorite things to do are playing piano, yoga, swimming, running (sometimes), playing with my pets, cooking, and, of course, eating. You are likely to see me with sour gummy candy for a study snack.

About Me

I am a third-year Ph.D. student in Linguistics at Tulane University. My GPA is 3.83, and as part of this program, I will be earning my Master's soon! My graduation date will be 2019. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Loyola University New Orleans in 2013. Right now, I research how language and the brain and social relationships influence each other. After school, I am looking forward to helping others through a career as a teacher, therapist, and/or translator.

Experience

Growing up, I tutored my brother with his schoolwork and sometimes my friends with their math and science homework. Throughout elementary, middle, and high school, I also helped my classmates with our music practice in the school bands. More recently, I have volunteered as a student instructor in a language revitalization program through Tulane University, which works to co-teach adults and youth in Marksville, LA, about the local indigenous language and culture of the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe.

Approach

Positivity and patience are key. My first approach is to always be encouraging while we work together to come to a shared understanding of the topic. My goal is to re-frame the topic and subject in a way that makes sense to the student. My aim is to try different studying approaches and perspectives in order to find one(s) that work best for the student not just for our subject, but also for other subjects and classes in the future.

During high school, I helped my classmates with their math homework when asked. My Linguistics degree is related to algebra, and math in general, because I use statistical and mathematical methods to carry out data analysis in my research.

Algebra II Tutoring

I took Algebra II in high school and earned an A in that class. I informally tutored my classmates in Algebra when asked. My Linguistics degree is related to Algebra, and math more generally, because the use of statistical and mathematical approaches is needed when analyzing data in my research.

English Tutoring

In high school, I took English and Literature classes in which I received A's. In college, I received mostly A's and some B's in English and Literature classes. Now, I regularly help and work with my classmates on writing and editing papers. I have informally tutored my younger brother and classmates with reading when needed. Reading comprehension is related to my Linguistics degree because it is necessary for me to read and have a proper understanding of scholarly texts for my research.

Statistics Tutoring

In college, I completed a statistics class in which I earned in A-. More recently, I completed a graduate-level statistics class in which I earned an A. Although I found my first statistics class challenging, and I received regular tutoring that helped me, this hard work paid off when I took the graduate-level statistics class. I was able to help others while we worked together on analyses of project data sets, which was very fulfilling. Statistical methods are necessary as I work on research data as part of my Linguistics degree.

Writing Tutoring

Throughout high school and college, writing has been an essential part of my success in English and Literature classes, as well as in most other subjects, for which I have earned mostly A's and some B's.
