Fun Facts

I have a pet snake named Peter whose skin is the color of obsidian. He’s small, and very kind, but he only watches ‘70’s vampire movies. Seriously. It can get annoying. Some other strange things: I have been spotted frozen in yoga poses while blasting punk rock, some have accused me of being a published poet, and my daughter emcee’s for a mouse circus in her closet. Tickets aren’t cheap but the show’s worth it, and Peter is NOT allowed entry. Sorry Pete.

About Me

I earned my Master of the Arts in English from the University of Texas at San Antonio. I believe strong writing starts with strong communication, a sense of community, and a creative approach. Being a lifelong student myself, I can’t see a better way to spend my future than as an educator, for learning is certainly a two-way street. I am a father and a husband, a brother and a son, a horror writer and a poet, a zoologist, a martial artist, and a badge-wearing, board-certified weirdo.

Experience

In seven years, and at UTSA alone, I have tutored over eight-hundred students in every possible area of the college writing experience. I think the numbers speak for themselves, there. Outside of institutions, I've enjoyed a massive clientele for private tutoring sessions in my community, from middle school reading comprehension to doctoral dissertation strategies. I started work as a tutor and mentor in high school, and now that I have my master's, I'm excited to help any in need.

Approach

Here's the truth: when it comes to writing, a one-size-fits-all approach simply doesn't work. In a decade of experience with students of diverse backgrounds, I've learned that the most important element of reading and writing is the unique means by which the student relates to the material; and let's be honest - it's not exactly easy to relate to some of the stuff we get in classrooms these days. I like to find creative ways for students to challenge this material as much as it challenges them.

Communication Tutoring

With a Masters in English, so many areas of the Communication discipline are familiar to me, and well practiced. I have tutored students in speech classes, professional writing, writing for marketing and sales, letter, email, memo, and essay construction, all of a wide variety, and I even have experience in blog writing and writing for journals/periodicals. Over the years, I have made countless presentations for college classes on writing and communication in the arts, in business, in political science, in graduate school, and in creative speeches.

English Tutoring

I have an MA in English, which, if nothing else, means I've spent hundreds and hundreds of hours studying literature (also known as READING), practicing the literary techniques I study (also known as WRITING), and engaging in a broader discussion about what it means to utilize language creatively (also known as LISTENING, or, occasionally, talking). The really scary part? I love it. My wheelhouse is horror, but if they teach it in college, I've likely studied it, from literary criticism and analysis to spoken-word poetry, and from Beowulf to Bukowski, Plato to Proust, Shakespeare to Stephen King, Marlowe to Mary Shelley to Mister Alan Moore himself! I passed my MA exam with high distinction. I'm working on getting my first novel published, which started a year ago as my master's thesis. I completed a nationally recognized undergraduate thesis about ghosts, San Antonio, and psychogeography when I was twenty-one. It's over 150 pages, but don't ask me why. I read omnivorously, write outrageously, and I think there are few things more fun than working with others who are on their own path through this massive, thoroughly bizarre world of storytellers.

Graduate Level Writing Tutoring

In addition to hosting and presenting in Graduate Level Writing events, workshops, and conferences, I've tutored hundreds of graduate students of diverse disciplines in their various writing areas, from developing professional writing portfolios, writing for business and political science fields, and all the way to advising in the development of journal articles, theses, and dissertations. My academic background is in literature and creative writing, so while the humanities are my home, I've seen great success in working on writing strategies for all graduate-level learners.

Literature Tutoring

If it's in your course catalog, odds are I've studied it. I passed my MA Exam with high distinction, and I pride myself in being conversant in all time periods, movements, and forms of Western literature, though my home library claims a much more global scope. Literary criticism and analysis should be inherent to the study of literature, and I have plenty experience tutoring students in all critical reading lenses, along with various modes of constructing, deconstructing, and reconstructing pieces of writing.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

Reading comprehension is often made into a series of overly complicated practices and exercises, when success with reading comp really only comes down to a small set of practical strategies, useful across all levels. Whether you're in an introductory course on college reading and writing skills or are practicing advanced comprehension for your GRE, graduate exams, or upper-level coursework, I have experience tutoring in your area.

Sociology Tutoring

While my experience in sociology classrooms is limited to introductory courses, I have tutored over one hundred students alone in writing for sociological explorations. My forte is literature, language, art, history, and philosophy, and when these disciplines are combined, you have a fundamental understanding of human culture and the intricacies of the larger human experience. I am confident in my ability to assist students in writing and exploring topics across the sociological spectrum.

Spanish I Tutoring

San Antonio es mi hogar, y mi fondo bilingüe refleja la diversidad de esta hermosa ciudad. La educación española ha sido un punto central de mi historia académica y confío en mi capacidad para ayudar a los necesitados que están explorando la educación española. Whether it's your first college Spanish class or your last, te puedo ayudar!

Writing Tutoring

Writing is absolutely my strongest skillset. I'm a published poet and critic, a first-place recipient of the Wendy Barker Graduate Creative Writing Award, and author of more than 5,000 pages in my academic career alone. I have hosted dozens of writing workshops, countless presentations on professional and creative writing processes, and tutored literally hundreds of students through the UTSA Writing Center and through the maintenance of a massive private clientele base. Beyond these concrete qualifications, I simply love writing. Storytelling fuels my engagement with human culture, but I cut my teeth working through hundreds of academic, research-based explorations on literature, history, the arts, and a surprisingly wide array of topics, themes, and critical lenses. Writing is why I am here, and I'm a firm believer in the fact that even for those of us who do not delight in placing letters on a page, writing can be a revelatory means of exploring both the inner self and the Self in relation to the outside world.

Writing Advance Tutoring

For further qualifications, see "Writing." My master's degree depended on my ability to write professionally, critically, and clearly. In my years of tutoring and advising on writing, I have helped over 100 master's and doctoral students complete dissertations, journal articles, and even publish entire books. The strategies I possess can be implemented by anyone, regardless of educational or linguistic background.

AP English Tutoring

I have an MA in English, which, if nothing else, means I've spent hundreds and hundreds of hours studying literature (also known as READING), practicing the literary techniques I study (also known as WRITING), and engaging in a broader discussion about what it means to utilize language creatively (also known as LISTENING, or, occasionally, talking). AP English classes in high school changed my life, and there are some simple but important strategies I would like to share with students so that their experience in these classes is made both more practical and more pleasant.

Arts Tutoring

The Arts are in my DNA. I come from a long line of artists, writers, and creators of diverse merit, and I have fashioned my education and my professional life accordingly. I have experience in writing about art and art history, and through collaboration with my brother, who received his degree in the fine arts from Texas State University in San Marcos and has since installed gallery work around the nation, I have specialized in working with students across all arts fields.

SAT Verbal/Writing Tutoring

There are a handful of simple yet ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL strategies for success in the verbal/writing sections of the SAT and other standardized tests we encounter in schools. I kicked this test's butt years back, but it was because of the help I had in preparing. I have experience with the Princeton Review SAT Prep programs, and I have been helping students through the stickier side of standardized test writing for more than a decade.

I have been mentoring students for more than a decade, and having finished my master’s degree this year, I definitely need to share some of the new strategies I have gathered which can make the student’s life practical, organized, and surprisingly easy.

ACT English Tutoring

There are a handful of simple yet ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL strategies for success in the verbal/writing sections of the ACT and other standardized tests we encounter in schools. I kicked this test's butt years back, but it was because of the help I had in preparing. I have experience with the Princeton Review SAT/ACT Prep programs, and I have been helping students through the stickier side of standardized test writing for more than a decade.

ACT Reading Tutoring

Critical reading skills are some of the most important tools we can gather through standardized test prep. These skills carry into all other aspects of the human experience, believe it or not, and I would love to share these secrets with those in need.

GRE Tutoring

For many, the GRE is the last standardized test we must confront. For others, it is just another hurdle in a long line of formal obstacles. Regardless of your station or your path, I have skills that can help anyone succeed with this exam. I did well with this test, but it was because I had someone show me these valuable tools to success.
