Fun Facts

Something most people find out after knowing me for awhile is that I enjoy playing video games to relax. This outlet is less a leisure activity and more challenge a self-development thing as the games I often play involve solving puzzles or using math to optimize my chances of out-performing other players. I'm also a closet dancer, some day soon I hope to sign up for dance lessons with my girlfriend so I can find other closet dancers and hopefully gain the confidence to dance in public.

About Me

I am a transfer student from California attending the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) as a science/texas/san-antonio">Computer Science major. My cumulative gpa is 3.7 and my STEM gpa is 3.33. I plan on focusing on a information security with my degree however, I lean more towards the desire to teach due to my previous experience as a Squad Leader in the U.S. Army. Teaching and mentoring my Soldiers was the biggest reward during my time in the military.

Experience

As an active duty Squad Leader in the Army my position required me to train Soldiers of various abilities and temperaments on a wide range of subjects. After transitioning into the National Guard and into College I often found myself mentoring my subordinates less on military subjects and more on their math and science coursework. At Pasadena City College I worked as a STEM mentor, assisting students with Chemistry and math concepts.

Approach

I find school very boring and useless in the context of textbooks and learning. However, my time in the military as well as going back to school after having a career has taught me that every subject has real-world applications. Framing material within real world examples, preferably in subjects my students have an affinity for, is the most fun and interesting way to help them understand and crave new material; like coating nasty chalk-tasting pill in sugar.

Algebra Tutoring

I'm taken College Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus through Calc 2. My average GPA for these courses 3.67. Admittedly, I struggled with math before college math but I've learned to translate the material into real world examples and enjoy translating this material to people I've tutored.

Biology I Tutoring

The most challenging part of biology is linking the hundreds of actions together to paint a complete picture of what is happening. I help you do this by relating the material to something you're familiar with so you can see the story as vividly as your favorite T.V. show!

Calculus I Tutoring

Taken at a CC, topics range from: Functions and Limits, Derivatives, Applications of Differentiation, Integrals and Applications of Integrals (normally seen in Calc 2). I received a B for the course due to applications of integrals but I later got a A for this material in Calc 2 at UTSA. I can help you see math as a language if you're not so strong with understanding what is going on and why.

Chemistry I Tutoring

Near perfect score on the ACS exam for the course, passed the course with an A. This course was taken at a CC with topics ranging from: Atomic structure and chemical bonding, stoichiometry, gases, liquids, solids and solutions. Lab work includes quantitative analysis, spetrophotometry and calorimetry. I tutored this subject and Chem 2 before transferring to UTSA
