Fun Facts

A fun fact about me is that I make jewelry in my free time! I have a huge collection of antique beads that I love to create intricate necklaces with. I also enjoy cooking asian-inspired meals and baking unique desserts. Right now, I am trying to master some tricky frosting styles! Lastly, and most importantly, I have a wonderful golden doodle puppy named Snicker Doodle.

About Me

I am a freshman Neuroscience major enrolled in Tulane University's Honors Program. My ultimate goal is to become a neurosurgeon, but I'm very open to exploring other fields as well. Last year, I graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut, where I was a four-year Dean's List award recipient and a member of the Cum Laude Society. I was also Editor of Choate's two main literary publications, so I am excited to get involved with Tulane's Newspaper, The Hullabaloo! (I am a huge grammar nerd.)

Experience

Throughout high school, I was self-employed as a professional tutor. I consistently produced positive, quantifiable results for middle school and high school students who were struggling in mathematics. I was also an English language tutor for Spanish-speaking people of all ages, through a volunteer organization I ran that aimed to connect Choate students with the people of our city. Helping children and young adults learn has been the most rewarding and enjoyable job I've ever held, by far!

Approach

When I’m with a student, we use critical thinking skills to tackle every subject. This ensures that students develop a deep understanding and appreciation of the material. They learn to apply ideas from one topic to another and truly get the most out of their education! I am also a firm believer in learning with the student, as opposed to simply teaching them. Our sessions are very interactive, which means my students often find enjoyment in a subject that used to intimidate them.

Algebra Tutoring

During my freshman year in high school, I excelled in an honors-level Algebra II course (with a cumulative GPA of 3.8). This demonstrated not only a mastery of Algebra II, but also of Algebra and Pre-Algebra. In addition, many of my past tutees have required help in Algebra I and Algebra II, so I have plenty of experience teaching both subjects.

Math Tutoring

During my freshman year of high school, I excelled in an honors-level Algebra II course (with a cumulative GPA of 3.8). This demonstrated not only a mastery of Algebra II, but also of Algebra and Pre-Algebra. In addition, many of my past tutees have required help in Algebra I or Algebra II, so the content is fresh in my mind and I have plenty of experience teaching both subjects.

Also, a significant portion of my tutees have required extensive help in Geometry. Geometry was my strong suit in middle school, and through my tutoring business I have further sharpened my skills in this subject. I find the concepts fascinating, and my goal is to help my students discover this as well.

I completed an honors-level Pre-Calculus course the second semester of my sophomore year, with a cumulative GPA of 4.0. I received the same marks in AP Calculus, which I completed during my junior year. During this period, I enjoyed tutoring other Choate students that were having trouble with Pre-Calculus and AB Calculus. Then, in my senior year, I took a fascinating AP Statistics course and received a cumulative 4.0 as well.

Pre Algebra Tutoring

I completed Pre-Algebra in 6th grade, having been the only student in my town to get a perfect score on our final exam. I expanded upon those skills in Algebra the following year. Then, as a Freshman in high school, I excelled in an honors-level Algebra II course, finishing with a cumulative GPA of 3.8. This demonstrated not only a deep understanding of Algebra II, but also a mastery of Algebra and Pre-Algebra.

Pre Calculus Tutoring

I completed an honors-level Pre-Calculus course the second semester of my sophomore year, finishing with a cumulative GPA of 4.0. While completing AP Calculus my junior year, I enjoyed tutoring Choate students in Pre-Calculus as well as AB Calculus. My knowledge of Pre-Calculus has only strengthened over time, and it remains one of my favorite areas of mathematics both to learn and to teach.

Psychology Tutoring

Throughout high school, I completed five different courses related to psychology: Introductory Psychology, Music and the Brain, Social Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, and AP Psychology. In addition, I was an active member in my school’s psychology and neuroscience clubs. I am now pursuing a career in neuroscience, having discovered my passion for the mechanisms of the brain. At Tulane, I am consistently drawing upon knowledge from my high school courses, so the information remains fresh in my mind. I would love to use my experience to help a psychology student in need!

SAT Math Tutoring

I received a score of 760 for the math portion of the SAT, putting me in the 99th percentile nationally. I have mastered algebra as well as what the SAT refers to as "advanced mathematical concepts," such as quadratic equations, exponents, polynomials, and nonlinear relationships between variables. I am also equipped to help students learn various strategies required for the SAT, like data and graph analysis and unit conversion.

Trigonometry Tutoring

A significant portion of my tutees have required extensive help in geometry/trigonometry. Trigonometry was my strong suit in middle school, and through my tutoring business I have further sharpened my skills in this subject. I find the concepts fascinating, and my goal is to help my students discover this as well.

Writing Tutoring

I have always been passionate about writing, be it creative or analytical. Because of this, my cumulative four-year GPA for high school writing/literature classes was a 3.9. I also received a score of 740 on the reading and writing section of the SAT, placing me in the 99th percentile nationally.

I wrote for my school’s newspaper for three years, which sharpened my grammar skills and eye for flow. I was able to further apply these skills during the summer of 2017, when I worked at a law office and one of my main jobs was editing legal documents for grammar, flow, and factual accuracy. I truly enjoy tutoring students in writing because I get to discover each student’s personal style, as well as help them develop a skill that will benefit them for life.

I teach my tutees how to be active readers and engage with the text. I also assist them in developing new writing skills and targeting recurring problems, as I have for myself many times in the past!

Middle School Math Tutoring
