Fun Facts

Outside of my academic pursuits, I have three main passions: rock climbing, traveling and cooking. Luckily, these three hobbies are easy to combine. I have found my way to over 20 countries and just recently returned from a 3 month climbing adventure across South East Asia. Even though I just returned to the US, I'm already planning my next adventure!

About Me

I'm a recent graduate (2013) from the University of Puget Sound with a major in Molecular Cellular Biology, a minor in Religion, and an emphasis in neuroscience (GPA~3.7).

With my degree I plan to enter an MD/MPH program focusing on primary care, global/public health education, and preventative medicine.

I'm a Dean's List student, received honors in the Major of Biology (1 of 6), was presented with an Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award, and am a NASA and Murdock Summer Research Grant awardee.

I was a Biology Teaching Assistant (TA) for four semesters teaching: Cell Biology, Intro Biology, and Genetics.

I also spent four semesters as a Chemistry TA teaching: General Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry I and II.

In both positions I was an academic resource for my students, I tutored, lectured, graded, and help run labs.

Additionally, I was the Educational Chair for the Student Affiliate of the American Chemical Society. This meant I organized, oversaw, and participated in the free Chemistry washington/washington/tacoma">tacoma">tutoring session.

After graduating, I was hired by the MultiCare Hospital as a System Technology Educator. Through this job I taught Doctors and Nurses how to use electronic medical records. This job required me to lecture 4-8 hours a day and provide one on one lessons.

While my washington/washington/tacoma">tacoma">tutoring approach certainly changes between different subjects, overall I like to be an invisible hand. What this means is, as I work a student through a concept or problem I help gather all the information they need to solve the problem, but make them connect the dots and achieve the right answer. I do enable the student to answer the question, but in the end they put the pieces together and they get the satisfaction of success. If all a washington/washington/tacoma">tacoma">tutor does is solve problems for the student, little is learned and often it makes the student feel less capable. And the less capable a student feels the less willing they'll be to put energy into that specific subject leading them to continue failing.
