About Oregon College of Art and Craft
The Oregon College of Art and Craft (OCAC), nestled in the scenic west hills of Portland, Oregon, was an esteemed institution renowned for fostering a vibrant community of artists and creatives. Established in 1907 by Julia Hoffman, with the vision to cultivate arts and craft movement in the Northwest, OCAC served as a pivotal platform for artists to explore their crafts intimately. It was regionally recognized for its excellence in areas like book arts, ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, and woodwork. While it was in operation, OCAC's geographic location positioned it amidst a hub of activity, not far from the thriving cultural district of downtown Portland and well-established academic institutions like Portland State University and the Pacific Northwest College of Art.
The faculty at OCAC, composed of practicing artists and craftspeople, brought a wealth of knowledge, experience, and creative passion to the classroom. These tutors fostered an environment of innovation and traditional artistry, aligning with the college's reputation for rigorous, studio-based learning. The collaborative efforts between students and faculty members often transcended the campus to engage with local galleries, craft fairs, and Portland's First Thursday arts happenings, thereby enriching the city's dynamic art scene. However, it's worth noting that in February 2019, OCAC announced it would cease offering degrees, leading to its closure.
Throughout its history, the Oregon College of Art and Craft was home to a small but dedicated student body, which allowed for an intimate educational experience that deeply valued the individual growth and development of each artist. Although the college itself did not have a mascot, the spirit and identity of the OCAC community were represented through the unique art and craft pieces produced by its students and alumni. Among its prominent alumni were figures such as Mandy Greer, a mixed media artist known for her elaborate fiber works, and Lee Kelly, a sculptor whose works can be spotted across Portland's public landscapes. The college operated several departments such as the Fibers Department and the MFA in Craft program, which stood out as notable programs shaping the next generation of professional artists and craftspeople. Despite its closure, the legacy of Oregon College of Art and Craft lives on through the enduring contributions of its alumni and the lasting impact of its ethos on the Portland arts community.
