About University of the Ozarks
The University of the Ozarks is a private, four-year comprehensive university located in Clarksville, Arkansas. It was founded in 1834 as Cane Hill School by Cumberland Presbyterians, making it one of the oldest institutions of higher education west of the Mississippi River. Known academically for its strong commitment to a liberal arts education, the university fosters a close-knit learning community with a student-to-faculty ratio that ensures personalized attention from instructors. The university's idyllic setting in the Arkansas River Valley is in close proximity to the Ozark Mountains, providing students with a scenic backdrop that complements their academic pursuits. In addition to the main campus in Clarksville, the university relates to the wider community by engaging in service-oriented projects and hosting various educational events throughout the year.
With a diverse student body of just under 900 students, the University of the Ozarks provides an array of academic programs through its several prominent colleges. The College of Education & Professional Studies and the College of Sciences and Humanities, for example, offer degrees in a range of disciplines, from environmental studies to business administration. One of the unique aspects of the university is its L.E.A.D (Leadership, Education, Adventure, and Development) Program, which underscores the importance of practical, hands-on learning experiences alongside traditional coursework. Faculty members at the university are deeply involved in the academic and personal development of their students, often acting as tutors and mentors beyond classroom learning. This level of engagement from the tutors helps cultivate a nurturing and supportive environment which is one of the hallmarks of the Ozarks' educational experience.
A point of pride for the university is its mascot, the Eagle, which symbolizes the soaring ambition and independence of its student community. Over the years, the university has produced many prominent alumni who have excelled in various fields, including Steve Clark, the former Attorney General of Arkansas, and Richard Hinkle, a highly respected marketing professor and author. These individuals represent the university's longstanding tradition of excellence and service. The University of the Ozarks continues to maintain a proud heritage of providing a transformative education, enabling students to lead purposeful lives as responsible citizens in a global community.
