Fun Facts

I am fairly new to the Philadelphia area. I moved to the area from Virginia Beach where I spent most of my free time riding bikes at the beach and enjoying the sun. Even though I miss the beach, I absolutely love living in the city. I love reading a great book in a park, taking my adorable dog for a walk, and spending time with my family when they come to visit me. I teach middle school full time, so I spend a lot of time finding exciting new things to teach.

About Me

I graduated from Old Dominion University in 2005 where I graduated with a B.A. in English, focusing on secondary education. I started teaching in Virginia Beach immediately after I graduated from college. I also took several graduate level classes through the University of Virginia's literature department. I moved to Philadelphia two years ago where I transitioned from teaching high school to middle school. My ultimate career goal is to work as a director of curriculum and instruction.

Experience

As a National Board and PA certified teacher with over ten years of English Language Arts teaching and philadelphia">tutoring experience, I have worked with students from grades 6-12. Most of my time was spent teaching 11th and 12th grade students, often helping them prepare for AP exams and SATs. I taught AP English for 8 years, so I am very familiar with strategies to help students improve their scores. I have also helped students improve their writing skills significantly in preparation of exams.

Approach

Having taught students all all different levels, I understand the importance of assessing a students specific individual need and learning style. I believe that "all students can learn," and it is the responsibility of the philadelphia">tutor to create a road map for how to best help the student reach his or her individual goals. One approach does not work for all, so I am dedicated to ensuring that I am finding the best strategy to obtain results. I help students see the value in reading and writing.
