Fun Facts
A large part of who I am is my love for sports. I grew up playing baseball and soccer, but I follow other professional sports as well, including basketball and football. Aside from exercising and watching sports, I love watching movies in my free time. Besides English, I also speak Japanese and a little bit of Spanish.
About Me
I am a rising senior Economics and Japanese Studies double major at Occidental College. I also have taken Sociology classes and plan to minor. I am still unsure of what I want to do after graduating, but going to graduate school on the east coast seems most appealing to me right now.
Experience
Growing up with two younger brothers I have had a lot of informal experience helping and leading by example. I have had the opportunity to further these skills through tutoring at Mathnasium and with Varsity Tutors. At Mathnasium I worked with elementary, middle, and high school children on various math subjects. As an independent tutor with Varsity Tutors, I put together and conducted lessons for elementary and middle school children in math and reading comprehension.
Approach
In my experience, positive reinforcement and patience are the two most important components in helping a struggling student succeed. For example, instead of telling a child they are wrong, having them say out loud their thinking process gives them more confidence in tackling a problem or subject. Everyone learns in different ways and at different paces, so patience is another vital component to teaching and not deterring a student from wanting to work hard to learn.
