Fun Facts
I really love music, and am particularly interested in world/folk music! I play a handful of Latin American folk instruments which I find really fun, and sometimes perform with some friends (though I can't promise I'm very good yet).
I've moved around a lot (I've attended school in 3 different countries and 6 different cities), and I love to travel and see new places. I've also gotten really good at packing!
About Me
I've just finished my Masters at Cambridge University's Department of Political and International Studies, and did my undergrad at Oxford University just before that. I've gained very solid written and critical thinking skills. I have gotten especially good at analyzing literature through my undergrad degree - in my spare time, I write book reviews for news sites.
I currently work in the non-profit sector, and I ultimately hope to return to academia or become a lawyer.
Experience
I primarily do SAT and SAT subject test tutoring. I try to find the most efficient, methodical approaches to questions, and believe my students have found this helpful. Students are often (rightfully!) daunted by these tests, and my goal is to help them feel confident and ready.
I also have 2 years' experience doing Spanish tutoring for grades 6+ and college students. I've volunteered to help 6-9th graders with homework generally, and especially enjoy helping students develop good study skills.
Approach
What most appeals to me about teaching is the independence and empowerment people can derive from learning new things and being introduced to tools or approaches they can use on their own. I'm a big fan of "why" and "how" questions, and a believer in helping people identify how they learn best so that they can be more independent learners.
I'm enthusiastic and analytical, and this shines through in my tutoring. I'd love to help improve your study skills, knowledge, and capacity as a learner!
Literature Tutoring
My undergraduate degree is in Philosophy and Spanish Literature/Language, and my best marks in my final exams were all in literature courses. Over the course of my degree, I earned several grants and awards for my academic performance in this side of my degree, and I am very passionate and knowledgeable about literature, whether in Spanish or in English. I also have extra-curricular experience writing book reviews for news sites. Given this, I am confident tutoring any student in this subject to the undergraduate level, and can help plan and proofread essays, discuss readings, etc.
Philosophy Tutoring
My undergraduate degree is in Philosophy and Modern Languages (Spanish), so I have spent the last 4 years studying both. I primarily focused on metaphysics, epistemology, and aesthetics, but also took historical philosophy courses and courses in ethics and logic. I'm well-equipped to help with any branch of philosophy up to an early undergraduate level, and with metaphysics, aesthetics, and epistemology to higher levels. I'm also happy to help with philosophy essay-writing and to go through any primary texts in close detail with you.
Algebra Tutoring
I earned a 740 on the math portion of the SAT in 2016, and, while I have a humanities degree, I have strong analytic skills. I made it to AP Calculus BC in high school and was even on my school's math team for several years (which gave me the chance to attend competitions in London and Vienna)! I would love to help you improve your math skills, whether for a class or for a standardized test, and believe that my friendly and methodical approach, combined with my knowledge and passion, will make me a great tutor.
SAT Math Tutoring
I earned a 740 on the math portion of the SAT (1500 overall) in 2016, and would be happy to tutor students on either or all three portions of the SAT. While I have a humanities degree, I have very good analytic skills and was a strong math student throughout high school. I was even on my school's math team for several years, and traveled to competitions in London and Vienna! I would love to help you improve your math/overall score on the SAT, and believe that my friendly and methodical approach, combined with my knowledge and passion, will make me a great tutor.
AP English Tutoring
I earned a 5 in AP English Literature, a 790 on the English SAT Subject Test, and a 760 on the language portion of the SAT (with 1500 overall). I also have a first class Oxford degree in Philosophy and Spanish Language/Literature, both of which involve very similar skills to English. I have some experience helping middle schoolers with their English homework, but can confidently tutor this subject up to the AP level, given my experience having taken the test (and similar ones) before and my skills in this area. I'd be happy to go over test-taking strategies, practice tests, and more, and would love to help you improve your score on the AP English exam. I believe that my friendly and methodical approach, combined with my knowledge and passion, will make me a great tutor in this subject.
