Fun Facts

I am originally from South Sudan, a country in East Africa. I was a refugee between the age of three and eight before settling in Nairobi, Kenya for four years. Awaiting an asylum, my family relocated to the United States in 1995. Another fun fact about me is that English is not my first language. In addition, I'm currently learning to speak Spanish.

About Me

I will be graduating from the University of Colorado at Denver with a Masters in Linguistically Diverse Education. I obtained my Bachelors in Physical Education with a minor in education/colorado/denver">Special Education. Immediately after college, I worked as a cashier at Walmart, a Barista at Starbucks as well as a Substitute teacher for the Garland independent School District in Texas. My graduate GPA is a 3.9. Overall, my average college GPA is a 3.4.

I have tutored both adults and elementary school students in the past. When I tutored adults, it was in an English language learning class where I engaged with them through conversation. I also tutored Math to a group of fifth graders back in 2013. I taught the students many different Math concept in the way that Silverlearning center, including Place Values, Decimals, Division and Multiplication just to name a few. Overall, helping both adults and students reach their highest potential was a great experience, especially when I saw students progress.

My teaching approach comes from theoretical perspectives, including meeting students where they're able to understand within Krashen's concept of Comprehensible Input, but also making sure that they are learning within their Zone of Proximal Development, a Vygotsky's perspective, which states, "it is important to know where a child is currently in their learning (Comprehensible Input) and where they will be in the future." My goal is that students will develop metacognitive strategies of their own, and not just the ones I teach them. A metacognitive learner thinks about thinking and approaches critical thinking skills in a very unique and explicit way during their executive thinking time.
