Fun Facts
I grew up in the capital city of Georgetown, Guyana, the only English-speaking country on the continent of South America. Prior to crossing over to academe in 2007, I traveled extensively across the ten regions of Guyana as a journalist. I subsequently developed a love for travel across the Caribbean region to discover the cultural fusion and diversity. I’m also a former TV anchor and producer.
About Me
I’m a media educator and scholar with a background in international communication, media pedagogy and political communication. I recently completed by Ph.D. in the Department of Communication at Georgia State University where I had the opportunity to teach diverse groups of students Public Speaking, Human Communication and Media, Culture & Society from 2016-2020.
Experience
I’ve worked with high schoolers (grades six to twelve) to develop their English (written), reading, composition and comprehension skills for five years as part of community service during my undergrad years. I’ve also tutored students at the university level in Guyana and at GSU particularly in speech writing, critical argumentation and thinking skills, and public speaking.
Approach
I believe that listening is critical to effective communication. I spend more time listening and less time speaking from the onset of my interactions with students to gauge their perspectives, fears and aspirations, while observing their non-verbal behavior as cues. This approach allows my students to develop the comfort level necessary to express themselves, ask questions and also receive timely feedback in a friendly setting.
