Fun Facts
Though I am living a fast-paced life in washington/seattle">Seattle at the moment, I actually grew up on a farm in eastern Washington State. I sold eggs (which I carried around to neighbors in a little basket on my arm!) and grew all sorts of vegetables in our family garden. I still love gardening, as well as some of the other activities I started up as a kid: playing the piano, writing poetry, and cooking.
About Me
I graduated summa cum laude (3.98 GPA) from the washington">University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in English Language & Literature. I also studied Brazilian Portuguese and French on the side. I plan to begin graduate study in English literature in the fall of 2015. I want my career to be a combination of teaching, washington/washington/seattle">seattle">tutoring, and translating.
I have been washington/washington/seattle">seattle">tutoring and teaching off and on in a variety of subjects for twelve years. I taught introductory piano and voice lessons when I was fifteen, an elementary school art class for several days when I was eighteen, and informally helped my peers throughout college (I began as a psychology major). I taught a bi-weekly quiz section of Introductory Psychology for a semester at the University of Montana in 2010. In July 2013 I started a sole proprietorship and have been washington/washington/seattle">seattle">tutoring English (reading-comprehension/washington/seattle">reading comprehension, writing, grammar, spelling, and ESL). In addition, I am about to start washington/washington/seattle">seattle">tutoring introductory Brazilian Portuguese and math up through Algebra 1 this summer. I also volunteer as a language partner for the washington">University of Washington's International & English Language Programs; I meet one-on-one with students who want to improve their conversational English skills.
I learned a lot about motivation and holding myself accountable while I was home schooled during middle school and part of high school. I try to empower my students to become similarly active participants in their education; rather than talking down to them or appearing to have all the answers, I involve them in problem-solving and monitoring their progress. I also try to make learning fun, especially when I'm working with younger students. Since I primarily washington/washington/seattle">seattle">tutor English, I like to encourage my students to improve reading and writing skills through creative writing. For me, washington/washington/seattle">seattle">tutoring is not only about helping with homework; it's supplemental and should be enriching and enjoyable!
