About Me
My name is Karen Li, and I just graduated from Rice University (Houston, TX). I will be attending Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX in the fall of 2014. At Rice, I was a psychology major and biochemistry and cell biology minor. I graduated with honors (cum laude) with a 3.84 GPA. During my time at Rice, I was the Wiess College Orientation Week Head Fellow, where I spent 7 months planning and leading orientation week for the Rice Class of 2017.
In high school, I tutored African refugees, mostly elementary and middle school children, on a variety of subjects. During one summer in high school, I went to Sichuan, China to teach English to elementary, middle, and high school kids. In college, I was a Teacher's Assistant for Psychology 101, for which I held weekly office hours and review sessions. I helped explain concepts of psychology to undergraduate college students, and I would review their material and prep them for upcoming exams. I also informally tutored high school students on public speaking.
No matter what type of student I am houston">tutoring, I always try and help to explain concepts rather than specific problems. I want my students to be able to take my houston">tutoring and apply it to all of their work, not just one specific assignment. I try to not only explain a concept, but also show how it is applicable to real life situations. I always allow the student to do the “problem solving” aspect on his/her own, so I provide guidance rather than answers. I also try to provide “tricks and tips” to help students with memorizing terms/concepts. I think it is important not only to enhance the student’s knowledge of the subject, but also to enhance their study habits as whole. Finally, I make sure my students know that the ultimate key to success is simple: practice, practice, practice.
