Fun Facts

I love taking photographs. Usually, I take pictures of my family, but lately, I have become interested in clouds. They change so much from moment to moment. I enjoy playing board games. I'm pretty good, and very lucky. I graduated from high school on my seventeenth birthday.
One more thing that people find interesting about me is that I lived in Hawaii for 3 1/2 years.

About Me

I have just received my Associate's of Science in Education. I am now pursuing my Bachelor's degree, also in Education, through Utah State. My emphasis area is English language. I plan to teach in an elementary classroom by Fall of 2016. I have maintained a 3.86 GPA, and hope to raise it as I complete my college career. I have been awarded several scholarships. I am most proud of the Foundation Honor's Scholarship, because it required a lot of commitment on my part to be eligible.

I currently work in an elementary school, in the Title One department. I have been with the school for four years. During my first two years, I worked with small groups of students, who needed support in specific areas. We tailored lessons to those needs, and regularly tested to assess the progress of our students. For the last two years, I have worked with students who were on grade level, and needed support to push their growth forward. During all four years, I have also worked one-on-one, with students who had fallen below the standards we were striving for. We worked for 20-45 minutes daily, in intensive study sessions, based in the Early Steps/ Next Steps program, to help these students bridge any gaps in their learning. I have found the one-on-one tutoring to be very fulfilling

Each student has very different needs, skills, and personalities. The first step in tutoring a student is obviously finding the underlying source of their challenges. (i.e. learning if a fourth grader struggles with long vowel combinations, while mastering other skills so well that this has gone undetected). Next, you must know what skills you can build on and what motivates the student.
Children are eager to learn, and eager to please. They want to be successful, so once you know what makes them tick, and what is currently getting between the child and the learning, all that remains is a promise that, with hard work, learning will become fun, engaging, and worthwhile again.
