Fun Facts
My greatest passion and definitely my strongest academic area is writing. I write in my spare time anything from poetry to short stories to essays to screenplays. In fact, in high school, because there were so many courses I wanted to take, I chose to skip my lunch period every day so that I could participate in the sub-formal journalism class and contribute to the school paper.
About Me
As a student I cherish knowledge with utter reverence. All subjects fascinate me and the development of new understanding motivates most of the decisions in my life. As an open-minded individual, there are few dispositions I openly scorn, but deliberate apathy and ignorance are certainly exceptions. As Facebook and Sparknotes garner ubiquity in the modern student's everyday life, I can feel these vices seeping into the millennial generations and want nothing more than to furnish whatever is necessary to combat them.
I have only recently begun tutoring professionally, but all of my students so far have made excellent progress and have ascertained the genuine excitement for learning that I very luckily grew up with since birth. I think the most fulfilling experience so far was when a physics student of mine showed me a diagram she concocted for a certain problem that closely resembled all of the idiosyncrasies I use in my visual explanations. I knew at that point that I had helped to facilitate the mental breakthrough that she had been waiting for and I was truly elated.
In terms of methodology, I use copious visual examples in order to cultivate a more tactile understanding as opposed to a superficially verbal and abstract approach. Forming a solid foundation of conceptual familiarity is paramount in learning a new subject and must occur before more complex ideas and theories can be explained. I believe this is the job of the tutor as the traditional classroom setting is designed to move at a rigid pace that simply cannot accommodate every student's needs. In a one-on-one environment, however, I wield the capability to identify and scrupulously neutralize a student's unique areas of difficulty. As someone who is empathetic to the frustrations that can arise while learning something new, I can efficiently help students through this process.
