Fun Facts

I am a language major, but I also like Science and Math. I am one of those folks who does not differentiae knowledge in learning; knowledge is knowledge, and learning is fun -- or the other way around..

Instead of fitting pigs into square-holes or developing them into flying elephants, I believe that there could be alternate approaches to mind development.

About Me

I am currently enrolled in San Francisco State University, and will be done with the B.A. by end of Fall Semester, 2014. My major is Chinese Linguistics; my overall GPA is above 3.00, and above 3.50 for the Chinese courses. During the short time that I became a transfer student at SFSU, I was awarded two scholarships: one from the university pool, and the other from my Chinese Department. As an older student, I plan to pursue an M.A.in the same field while working part-time after graduation.

In the past, I have helped many people of different backgrounds in bridging their bilingual gaps. I was a tutor in cultural issues, language problems, and paths to social advancement. As a freelancer, I had to be very flexible with work. I tutored adults with business compliance, children with Math and ESL homework, and seniors on how to operate technical gadgets. From past tutoring experiences, I've come to realize that the students need to have a desire to learn in order to gain progress. It is, however, on the other hand, absolutely possible to cultivate a person to be learn-focused if given the right environment, but that is beyond and apart from tutoring. Tutoring is closing the gap between knowledge and almost-knowing -- kind of like the assistant tour guide who goes back to find the travelers left behind, and guide them on track.

I believe that different folks need different tutoring approaches, and this goes with the differences in age, cultural background, upbringing, personality, and etc. As a starter, I'd like to level with students in communication to find out their mind-tendencies, and develop a plan from there.

I'd want to find out why the students are to be tutored: do they have a desire to learn, or are they forced here by their parents? Are the students interested in the subject matter, and want to take on more knowledge on top of their school curriculums? Are the students failing because they have no clue on how to approach the school subject?
