Fun Facts

I am originally from the Midwest--born and raised in the Chicago-area. I like to think that makes me friendly, down-to-earth, and responsible. I have lived in California now for 14 years and love it's diverse culture and beautiful spaces. I enjoy hiking, weightlifting, swimming, and watching old movies as hobbies. I also play the guitar, badly.

About Me

I hold a doctorate in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I have over twenty years of experience as both a teacher and tutor of composition and literature at the college level. I also have extensive experience with ESL students in composition. As the director of a writing center, I have helped thousands of college students across the curriculum with their written assignments.

Experience

In addition to expertise in composition and literature, I also have tutored philosophy, public speaking, and the history of the United States.

Approach

My teaching philosophy is based on the old proverb: give someone a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach them to fish, and you feed them for life. This is also my approach to tutoring. I teach students how to critically write and think for themselves so that they can achieve their academic and life goals. Students need to be able not to just accurately recall information, but also to use that information to think critically and creatively.
