Fun Facts
After fighting through extreme health problems a year ago, I'm back to regularly hiking across Northern California and swimming in Ocean beach. I'm from Colorado so I breathe the outdoors, but when I'm not active I love to watch films and drag my friends on trips across SF. I'm passionate about politics and current events, and I hope one day to work in government or write about it from a safe distance. I admit to being a Dodgers fan too (although don't hold that against me).
About Me
Hi! My name's David and I'm a senior at Berkeley majoring in history. I've been a straight-A student since high school and currently maintain a 3.9 gpa in my final semester at Cal. I'm currently on a leave of absence as I make my way back from nerve damage, but I plan to complete my thesis by next semester on how local residents shaped Berkeley's urban development in the early 1970s. Post-college I hope to pursue a career either in criminal justice reform, journalism, or if I'm lucky enough speech-writing. I chose to major in US history as an alternative to poli-sci because I believed understanding the historical bedrock of our world is one of the most overlooked yet crucial ways to understand modernity.
In addition to school, I wrote as a film critic for the Daily Cal (Berkeley's newspaper of record); although the job often demanded a quick turnaround time, I loved the immense diversity of subjects I was allotted in my articles. In particular, my "culture shot" articles allowed me to connect pop culture, philosophy, and current events in fascinating ways. I also wrote for a human rights journal titled "The Rights Stuff" where I created an investigative 3-part piece on American criminal justice.
I'm an avid film fan and since pre-school, I've been a political/current event junky. There are few pop-culture subjects I don't love to discuss. I believe this background, in addition to my practical tutoring experience, makes me an excellent choice for frog tutoring. I'm extremely well-read and well-educated which gives me both an immense reservoir of knowledge and a fantastic ability to connect with any student. I have strong technical skills in test prep and the humanities and enough college math/CS to make me a capable stem tutor for lower levels as well. I'm excited to get started!
Experience
As a film critic for Berkeley's on the record newspaper, I worked under extremely tight deadlines with editors to produce quality content. Thus, I have first-hand experience learning from advanced tutors on everything from line edits to overarching content direction. I've also spent years guiding my sister through high school essays and college apps and mentoring 8th grad students on their NHD projects. Additionally, since 2021 I've worked about 15-20 hours a week virtually for tutorme.
Approach
My tutoring approach emphasizes positive discourse, content education, and directional motivation. I'm excellent at teaching to a wide variety of students and learning styles; this allows me to efficiently break-down material in a way that works best for each individual student. But above all else, I stress compassion and patience because every kid should be given the opportunity to succeed. Homework and test-prep are stressful enough as is and a tutor should be there to aid students.
