Fun Facts
I grew up in Southern California, so I love the ocean! My favorite sea animal is a manatee. On land, I love horses. When I was really little, I used to think I could keep a horse on our apartment's balcony. That dream wasn't successful, but a different dream was: I've been dancing since I was five years old! Now I'm on my college's hip hop team. One day, I want to learn to play the cello.
About Me
I'm about to start my junior year as a Cultural Anthropology major at the chicago">University of Chicago. I love studying in the city, especially when the leaves change in autumn. For the past two years, I have made Dean's List & have worked in community, non-profit organizations. I have a special interest in youth, community, and arts education. When I graduate, I aspire to earn a Master's Degree in Public Policy or Urban Planning. It is my dream to do research and advocacy to advance American domestic policy.
In high school, I gained experience as a dance teacher for children ages 3-6. This helped me develop skills working with younger children, which I applied during my freshman year as a kindergarten chicago">tutor and during my sophomore year as a pre-school chicago">tutor. Both experiences were sponsored by the chicago">University of Chicago's Neighborhood Schools Program, which works to improve student progress in neighborhood schools on the South Side of Chicago. I also have 6 months of experience as a high school student mentor, with special focus on writing skills & the college application process. Throughout college, I have continued teaching dance to young students, and last year I ran an after-school dance program at a neighborhood elementary school.
Having spent the last two years as a one-on-one, small group, and classroom chicago">tutor of young children in public schools on Chicago's South Side, I understand what it is like to work with students who may be unmotivated, who might feel unprepared, or who need some additional support. I make it a priority to be observant of students, ask them questions, and tailor my teaching to their learning style. I aim to be a compassionate teacher who is as interactive as possible. Learning is most fun for students when they feel accomplished, and I give students the skills and positive attitude they need to make progress -- now and in the future.
