Fun Facts

Have traveled extensively but the biggest thrill was seeing a replica of the Trojan horse in the ancient Troy excavation. Just had to climb on top of the horse for a photo op! Lately I have been writing comedy with my co-writer for her new podcast. The two characters we write lines for are zany and crazy. It's been hysterical.

About Me

Spent more than two decades teaching high school English while serving as a Army Reserve officer and teaching adult students at night at several universities in Miami. Prior to that my career had been in marketing (GE) and advertising (New York agencies). My B.A. is from Carnegie-Mellon University in English-History; my MBA is from Washington University (STL).

Experience

Usually my juniors in English came to me in their senior year for assistance with their college application essays. This essay is probably the highest stakes piece of writing done by a senior in their entire academic career. Together my students and I pulled off a number of very persuasive essays for application reviewers all over the country. And many students got in to the college of their choice. Tutoring always seems to glow with wonderful outcomes!

Approach

My class room or class session is highly interactive. For me, teaching is dialogue and relationship building. The student and I first discuss the task or assignment at hand. Is there a due date? We assess project complexity, How much has the student been able to produce on this project. Where do we need to go? Once we chart a path, the sequence of steps to take becomes clear. As a writing teacher I clue in to the basics: topic/thesis development and outline to a polished end product.

Writing Tutoring

When I attended Carnegie-Mellon University I took all the writing courses I could get: Composition, Journalism, and Technical Writing. On top of that I had to produce an annotated research paper every week. This intensity leads to making one a very good writer. I have worked professionally as a writer for corporations and the military and have been published. I have served as a adjunct in a number of universities primarily teaching Business Communications.

Writing Advance Tutoring

On a university level I taught technical writing and Business Communications. I have taught high schoolers how to do an annotated research paper and did many of these myself as a graduate and undergraduate student. My talent is helping students synthesize information from multiple sources and building a coherent document.

AP English Tutoring

I have taught high school Honors English and many of my students went on to take the AP tests (literature, etc.). My students reported that it was a breeze since my methods in Honors were the same as what the AP teachers did. The key to AP success is to really understand the writing prompt and stay within the confines of that prompt while writing.

Business Tutoring

For several years I taught Business and Finance on a high school level as part of CTE (Career and Technical Education). The students played the stock market game, went on a field trip to a factory, and were exposed to economics as a background for business activity. They researched topics like "which country in the world buys the most gold." I kept the class lively and several of my students became Business majors in college.

English Tutoring

I have taught English in grades nine, ten, eleven and twelve. The focus was on the development of critical thinking skills and writing skills. My classes also worked on improving reading comprehension, listening and speaking. The student did projects which involved literary analysis and presented their work. As we moved along I addressed the mechanics of grammar, punctuation, and the expansion of vocabulary.

SAT Verbal/Writing Tutoring

I have coached ACT verbal and writing. The real ability to pass a standardized test is to build superior reading comprehension and attack the questions with that skill.
