Fun Facts

I do some freelance writing on sports, have worked as a print media advisor for a non-profit abuse shelter, and played live music in Austin for many years. I also have extensive experience with fine dining. This versatility, I think, really helps me as a teacher, employee and peer.

About Me

I am very passionate about writing and reading, as they are my major hobbies, but I also am a nerd who enjoys researching everything from music to film to sports to literature. Family, community and values are very important to me and I like for the job I have to value these same qualities.

Experience

Teaching Comp 101 and 102 at McNeese University was a very specific experience. Both Covid and a major hurricane (it is located in south Lousianan) effected our in-person capability, so we had to adapt and make due, including acclimating to online education very quickly. I believe this made me more capable of handling adversity in work climates than most new graduates from MFA programs. I also have experience freelance writing and doing technical writing in both creative and professional setting

Approach

I highly value the individual autonomy of students, and believe each one is as capable a thinker as any teacher or more accomplished student. Often, their reticence to embrace their own critical thinking is a result of self-doubt or a lack of passion from their educators, and I strive to change that outlook for any students I have. They should embrace critical thinking, finding that it's something they utilize every day in their lives, and I cherish helping them to understand the versatility of

English Tutoring

Since English covers the subjects below, I will explain my qualifications for each below. In general, my background is in composition and my subject of study was creative writing, but of course to accomplish the course load for the creative writing degree I also had to learn technical writing, theory, editorializing, and many other forms of writing and "the world of letters"

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

Whether it's reading the papers of beginning writers and being able to acclimate to that level to help them better revise, or reading anything from ancient classics to postmodern fiction, reading comprehension is something I believe is one of my best skills, as well as then applying critical thinking to the information itself.

Study Skills Tutoring

As someone who taught composition classes, the study skills of my students was one of the hardest things to engender. They often have natural intuition about the subject, some sort of attitude or personal flair for their opinions, and a viewpoint of their own, but their habits for study hold them back.

Writing Tutoring

As someone whose research was in fiction and creative writing, and who has been a member of a MFA writer's workshop, but also taught composition, did technical writing for a non profit, and wrote for a school newspaper, I feel especially equipped to teaching writing in its different forms.

Writing Advance Tutoring

As someone whose research was in fiction and creative writing, and who has been a member of a MFA writer's workshop, but also taught composition, did technical writing for a non profit, and wrote for a school newspaper, I feel especially equipped to teaching writing in its different forms.

Literature Tutoring

A fiction MFA means extensive, extensive reading. This includes not only the "canon", but also hundreds and hundreds of pages of the material of your classmates, which you then critique and give notes on. The ability to be a good reader is paramount to my entire masters program.

Education Tutoring

I believe, because of my experience with both in-person and online education, as well as the hands-on process of an MFA program, including close work alongside peers, I can help developing educators better understand tools which will help them teach others.

Graduate Level Writing Tutoring

I have a 150-page theses of short fiction which I used to graduate, as well as multiple ten and fifteen page samples of academic writing as part of the course load. I taught undergrad composition, where papers never exceeded ten pages, but nevertheless, I feel very comfortable because of the peer-review aspect of an MFA that I can help other students and writers when it comes to either their creative work, or advanced academics.

AP English Tutoring

I was in Gifted and Talented Classes from an early age and had a very advanced reading level, and so in high school I very much enjoyed the elevated material of AP English. I also was in theater, and had a play I wrote in high school win a play writing competition and then be performed by the aforementioned high school.

History Tutoring

I was never a history major, and have no proof or qualifications of note, but I do feel very comfortable helping students to understand history, partly from my background in literature. So much of literature is reflective of sociology and history, and I think the ability to teach the way culture changes, the way geopolitics and social structures shape us, aligns quite closely with comprehension of literary movements and literary history. The same concepts which are behind good reading comprehension and critical thinking are what allow us to understand the implications of historical facts.

SAT Verbal/Writing Tutoring

My Essay writing on standardized testing was always the highest possible grade. I believe this is because I'm good at persuasive writing and acclimating to different prompts, often by building my writing mindset around what the prompt wants, as opposed to any kind of stubborn outlook. "Kill your darlings", of course, being important writing advice. It is always about what's best for the story or paper be what persuades or captures the reader.

Social Studies Tutoring

Same qualities I spoke of for High School History--I believe extensive expertise in literature is impossible to accomplish without a fairly good knowledge of history, as well as the ability to comprehend and explicate the way history and society change and the connections between different evens and eras.
