About Me
I am a retired professor from the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Carabobo, in Venezuela. I have a Master's degree in Reading and Writing, a Specialization in Teaching in Higher Education, and studies in Linguistics Applied to the Teaching of Foreign Languages. I am currently doing my final dissertation for a Doctorate in Social Sciences, majoring in Cultural Studies.
Experience
As a university professor for 25 years, I was in charge of tutoring the students in each of the subjects I taught, because it is one of the norms of the university where I worked, that teachers give weekly tutoring to those students who require it.
Approach
Learning is a process that occurs in a particular way for each student. All learners assimilate the contents at their own pace, according to their skills or previous experiences or regarding their interests and levels of motivation. Therefore, these are aspects that every tutor must consider during the guidance sessions. I studied French for 4 years at a French Academy called Alliance Francaise in my native country Venezuela. I could achieve a very high level of proficiency which permitted me to teach French for Specific Purposes at Universidad de Carabobo, where I graduated as a Language teacher.
Spanish I Tutoring
I am a language teacher and my native language is Spanish. That means that I have a deep knowledge of this language and the culture that underlies it. I have vast experience teaching Spanish as a second and foreign language. Besides, I have a master's degree in Reading and Writing in Spanish, which helps me develop the four skills in my students.
Spanish II Tutoring
As a language teacher and as a native Spanish speaker, with more than 25 years of experience in the field of language teaching, I am used to the different levels of proficiency my students can have in Spanish. This means that I am able to adapt my strategies and teach them this language according to their needs and previous knowledge.
Spanish III Tutoring
Being a native Spanish speaker and being academically prepared for teaching languages, make me a professional who not only has a deep knowledge of the Spanish language (its grammatical rules, functions, and uses), but also a teacher who knows the linguistic varieties and registers that characterize it and the different contexts and cultural aspects that are implicit in such varieties.
Education Tutoring
I have a Bachelor's degree in Education, a Specialization in Higher Education Teaching, and a Master's in Reading and Writing which is focused on Education. Besides, I have worked as a professor at the Faculty of Education of the University of Carabobo (Venezuela) for 25 years, preparing language teachers for different levels and contexts. Both my preparation and my experience make me a good candidate for tutoring in this field.
French I Tutoring
I have the knowledge and experience to teach the contents of French I to students, in a dynamic way that stimulates them to continue learning more of this language. I studied French for four years until reaching the level of French Civilization and then I taught this language for several semesters at the University of Carabobo, in Venezuela.
French II Tutoring
I studied French for four years until I reached the level of French Civilization, which included learning cultural elements such as the geography, literature, and history of French-speaking countries. This study experience allowed me to consolidate a level of proficiency that qualified me to teach different levels of this language. Then I worked as an instructor of that language (French I and French II) for several semesters at the University of Carabobo, in Venezuela.
ESL Tutoring
I have a Bachelor's degree in Education with a major in English. Besides, I lived in England for a year and I have been living in the USA for almost six years, which somehow helps me to perceive some of the problems a second language learner goes through in relation to the accents and cultural aspects that can influence his acquisition process. Besides, my experience as an English learner permits me to know the areas of difficulty for others learners that might not be so obvious for native speakers. Additionally, I have researched a lot about second language learning and teaching. Some of my research work on this topic is shown on google (see Heddy Hidalgo Rivero).
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
I can be an excellent instructor of this subject. because I have a degree in Education, with a major in English, which trained me to develop in my students the four skills (Reading, writing, Speaking, and Listening) necessary to master a language. Apart from that, I did a master's degree in Reading and writing that specifically prepared me for the teaching of these two skills. Besides, I was a professor of English Literature for several semesters at the University of Carabobo and my students achieved great success in the subject.
Latin Tutoring
I studied Latin for two years in High School and managed to get a grade of 100/100 throughout both courses. This made me act as a tutor for my classmates and make them easily grasp the declension rules and conjugations in that language with simple explanations.
Spanish Tutoring
Teaching my native language (Spanish) to Middle School students is an enriching experience for me, thus I consider this age, the ideal one for learning a language. As a language teacher, I can employ the right strategies to deliver the content in a way that my young students can have fun and learn at the time. I am prepared to teach them the rules, functions, uses, and cultural; aspects of Spanish. I have more than 25 years of experience teaching Spanish as a second and foreign language. Besides, I have a master's degree in Reading and Writing in Spanish, which helps me develop different skills in my students.
Reading Tutoring
Since I believe that reading is not only a cognitive skill but also a social one, I consider that it should be developed by taking into consideration elements such as the language in which the text is written, the context within which this is written. its type or genre, its purpose, and its cultural elements. Under this perspective, I approach the development of this skill in a way that can be meaningful to the student.
Conversational Spanish Tutoring
As a native Spanish speaker, I present a very high level of proficiency in this language, which means I can easily express myself and communicate to others my ideas. For my conversation classes in Spanish, I take into account different aspects. In the first place, I evaluate the level of knowledge of the language that my students present. Second, I consider their interests and tastes. If the classes are related to the school curriculum and my students have to meet the objectives stipulated by their classroom teacher, my teaching strategies are directed towards achieving those objectives. However, there are basic aspects that I always include and that are inherent in the development of this skill: pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and grammatical precision.
