Fun Facts

I’m an indie crafter and make quirky, cool, and postmodern collages. I also upcycle trays and boxes I find at thrift stores. The images I use are contemporary and kitschy. One project was a tray for my nephew with Jay Z and a background of dark flowers. Reading novels is a great joy and I love hearing reading suggestions. (Wordle anyone?)

About Me

I graduated with a Master's in English (4.0 GPA) from the maryland">University of Maryland at College Park. I taught college-level courses for 13 years, and worked at Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth for four years, where I taught AP English, Crafting the Essay, and Writing Analysis and Persuasion. I have also worked with some independent tutoring companies. I am adept at tutoring ELA, and work with the common core standards for your state. My passion is tutoring writing--if you have written a paper, regardless of the subject, I can help you to make it better. I just helped a student raise her grade on an essay from a C to an A. My approach is very learner-centered, meaning I ask you what you want to accomplish in our sessions and tailor the lesson plans accordingly. I like to get to know you a little bit-what your interests are and if you have any hobbies. This way, I can make the sessions more interesting for you. I use a variety of tutoring techniques, including boosting your confidence, active listening, asking open-ended questions, requesting your feedback, positive reinforcement, encouraging creativity, and patience. I hope to have the chance to work with you soon!

Experience

After grad school, I taught college writing, literature, and humanities. I helped many students raise their grades by two letters, say from a D to a B, b After 14 years of teaching college, I tutored AP English and Crafting the Essay to gifted students at Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY). I love working one on one but have also honed the art of writing feedback to student papers.

Approach

I believe in encouraging students and raising their confidence levels to believe in themselves. One CTY parent wrote, “Jade did a masterful job of providing the constructive feedback necessary to help my son stretch and improve his reading/writing skills, while at the same time providing the praise and encouragement to build his confidence." I will give you the skills to feel confident in subjects that are challenging. We will take your C level paper and turn it into an A!
