About Me

I am currently a senior Liberal Studies major (& psychology minor) at fresno-pacific-university">Fresno Pacific University. Throughout my undergraduate career, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA and am a member of Alpha Chi, a national academic honors society. This is also my third year as a freshman mentor at FPU. I work each year with a group of 15-20 freshman to help them adjust to college life and academics, meeting with them in group and one-on-one settings. After graduating this spring, I will be earning my MS teaching credential and Master of Arts in Teaching.

In the past, I was a volunteer reading fresno">tutor with Reading and Beyond, a local organization dedicated to helping students improve their reading and literacy skills. During this time, I would meet once or twice a week with elementary-aged students and work with them on reading level-appropriate books, building vocabulary, reading-comprehension/california/fresno">reading comprehension, sight words, spelling, and so on. I would keep detailed records of the activities we did for the day as well as notes about improvement and trouble areas. One semester, I was able to work with a tutee alongside a student reading specialist. This was a positive experience that solidified my confidence in my abilities as a reading fresno">tutor and in my ability to use my teaching skills adaptively to best fit my students.

My fresno">tutoring approach is flexible. I like to tailor my fresno">tutoring to the individual student. I pay close attention to see which approaches they respond to and mold my fresno">tutoring to their needs. As a fresno">tutor, I help students learn. This means that I do not merely provide them with answers, but guide them in finding correct answers on their own. I believe that students can grow more when they are presented with a growth-level challenge and are allowed to recognize and fix their own mistakes than if correct answers are always given to them. My approach involves pulling out what the student knows and working with that knowledge rather than simply telling the student what he or she should know. I
