Fun Facts

I have worked for over 30 years in the beverage and brewing industry, and love photography, travel, and outdoor activities.

About Me

My wife and I enjoy life on Bainbridge Island, and I have taken a 5-month break from my full-time work, developing new products and processes for a popular Seattle craft seltzer company.

Experience

While living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I tutored students (K-12) in math and English. It was particularly gratifying, and I made a big difference with kids who had really been struggling.

Approach

By nature, I am patient and empathetic. I know that, by nature, children want to learn. They are often discouraged, however, by failure, and the classroom environment. I engage my student's natural curiosity, and build upon their incremental successes. I get a kick out of them, and they know it!

I have always been comfortable with mathematics, and made my way through algebra, trigonometry, and geometry without any difficulty. I also studied calculus as an undergraduate, but will need quite a refresher to be able to teach it! As a tutor, I was comfortable teaching methematics up through algebra. For young students, I have ben particularly successful in recognizing "bottlenecks" (e.g., operations with fractions) that hold them back, and removing them!

Physics I Tutoring

I have always enjoyed physics, and did well in my high school physics class.

Study Skills Tutoring

I was a good student because I approached the material systematically, and gained confidence that I knew it completely. This gave me confidence, and alleviated any anxiety prior to exams. I was able to recognize gaps in my understanding of the material, and fill them . I will be gratified to share these skills!

I just returned from a trip to France, where my sister lives. I was happy to be able to speak French, and undestand it . I am far from fluent, however, but I can be an effective tutor in basic French grammer, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

Writing Tutoring

As a student, I wrote many papers and essays. My graduate research was published in a scientific journal, and I've written articles published in trade journals. Pre Algebra Tutoring

Throughout my student days, I never had any problem with math courses. I did well, and ultimately applied what I learned in physics, chemistry, and engineering courses I took as an undergraduate and graduate student. As a brewer, I've continued to apply what I learned in routine calculations. As a tutor, I successfully helped students in gaining confidence and learning concepts they had trouble with.

Biology Tutoring

I graduated UC Santa Cruz with a Bachelors Degree in Biology, and excelled in all my coursework. My interest in biological sciences began in high school, where I did extracurricular work assisting in cardiovascular research at a local hospital. Subsequent coursework covered biochemistry, general biology, microbiology, genetics, and applied microbiology.

Biology AP Tutoring

Throughout my student days, I never had any problem with math courses. I did well, and ultimately applied what I learned in physics, chemistry, and engineering courses I took as an undergraduate and graduate student. As a brewer, I've continued to apply what I learned in routine calculations. As a tutor, I successfully helped students in gaining confidence and learning concepts they had trouble with.

Chemistry Tutoring

I did very well in the basic chemistry courses I took in high school and as an undergraduate, and familiarity with the basic concepts served me well in advanced chemistry coursework (Organic and Physical Chemistry). As a brewer, I continue to apply these concepts regularly. I look forward to using a practical approach in teaching them to my students!

AP English Tutoring

I took AP English in high school, and the experience has had a lasting effect on my approach to literature. I look forward to engaging my students' love for good writing, and the recognition and appreciation for why and how the artful use of literary devices enliven the written word.
