About Me

I'm a retired electrical engineer -- and a registered massage therapist -- currently tutoring part-time at Austin Community College (ACC). I enjoy working with curious young people – the ones unsatisfied with memorizing facts: who want to know the 'why' behind the facts. And I understand that any sufficiently persistent inquiry always ends with, "I don't know"; (or even, "No one knows"). Which means when I don't know the answer . . . I'll just say so. I won't BS you.

Experience

I have tutored various math, physics, and electronics courses for the last 15 years at ACC. Most students I've worked with have offered lots of good excuses – none of which interest me at all – but no documentary evidence that they have ever attempted a single math or physics problem in their life. They were unwilling to invest the time and effort required to pass the class. And so, they did not pass the class. There is nothing the teacher can do to make up for what the student will not do.

Approach

I always treat students with respect and demand the same in return. At every meeting, I always ask to see all the student's homework. If they have something besides blank pages, we will make progress – if they have only really good excuses, we will not. If you defend your limitations . . . you get to keep them.
