About Me
I am a recent graduate of University of Michigan. I love kids and have been working in Detroit schools for the past 2 years. Currently I work as a K/1 reading and math interventionist at a charter school in SW Detroit and I will be returning back to school next semester at Eastern Michigan University to pursue certification in ESL and Reading!
My experience is extensive and varied, though the bulk of my experience is definitely with phonics, literacy, and ESL in the elementary grades. During high school I tutored other students in Spanish I & II. Throughout college, I tutored with America Reads for 4 years, detroit">tutoring K-3 reading and writing to Spanish-speaking English language learners. I also worked with Proyecto Avanza: Latino Mentoring Association where I was paired with a 3rd grader throughout the year to work on math and reading-comprehension/michigan/detroit">reading comprehension. I also taught ESL to elementary and middle school students from Korea. After graduation, I moved to Detroit, where I have worked as a pre-school and elementary Spanish teacher at a montessori school and a K/I ESL, Reading, and Math interventionist. At our school, I also designed curriculum for and taught a 1-week ESL class for adults. On the side, I pursued training in the Phonics First curriculum, a multisensory approach to phonics learning that was designed to help dyslexic students but has been found to be highly effective for all students. I use this curriculum with our kindergarteners and have also tutored K-5 in the curriculum at other schools the past two summers.
I believe strongly in individualized and creative approaches for both child and adult learning. It is never the case that someone "can't learn" but rather that the material has not been presented in a way that the student can or wants to learn. I love finding innovative and unique ways to inspire reading, math, and language learning and can't wait to work with your family!
