Fun Facts

My first major in college was music education, I played clarinet and saxophone, and I participated in one or more ensembles every semester as an undergraduate.

My recent hobbies include learning German, reading science fiction novels, and spending plenty of time with my dog.

About Me

I'm a certified secondary math teacher in Texas. I taught high school math for four years before transitioning into the tutoring industry.

I graduated from Texas A&M University-Commerce with a B.S. in Mathematics, Magna cum Laude.

Experience

As a classroom teacher, I taught courses in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus AB. As a tutor, I've worked with students of all ages (from Kindergarten - Undergraduate), from a wide variety of backgrounds, both in person and online.

I was also fortunate enough to have a student worker position during my senior year of college as a teaching assistant for a Calculus II course.

Every one of the wildly varying instructional roles has made me a better teacher.

Approach

I believe the single most important aspect of any instructional setting is establishing a positive, encouraging student-teacher relationship built on mutual respect.

I also feel strongly that building student confidence is just as important as building student skills, and that staying flexible enough to adjust your delivery to complement a student's strengths can be a key difference between good instruction and great instruction.

Pre Algebra Tutoring

I feel particularly strongly about the importance of Pre-Algebra, because it seems to be a major shifting point in many students' math journeys, and all to often it's a shift toward discouragement and anxiety.

When pre-algebra students have a chance to get just a little more individual attention, it's very possible to cultivate an clear understanding of how the concepts they're learning are related to real, everyday experiences, and it makes all the difference.

Algebra II Tutoring

As a high school teacher, I taught an Algebra II course for 2 years, (both regular and Pre-AP sections).
Since transitioning into a tutoring role, I've noticed that some of the most common concepts that lead students to seek out help are major concepts from Algebra II and Pre-Calculus. That frequency has given me a chance to practice teaching these concepts so many times, that it becomes second nature to identify student misconceptions and shift into an explanation that's likely to resonate with them.

Calculus Tutoring

As a high school teacher, I taught AP Calculus AB for 2 school years, and attended a 30 hour educator training dedicated to AP Calculus AB which was written and presented by the College Board - the organization that writes the AP exams.

As a senior in college:

1) I held a student job as the Teaching Assistant for a section of Calculus II.

2) I was a member of the 1st place team at the 2013 MAA College Calculus Bowl.

3) My senior honors thesis, "The Development of Calculus and its Effect on Rigor in Mathematics," traced the evolution of Calculus' key concepts from their emergence in ancient Greece to the paradigm shift they sparked in early 20th century mathematics.
&

4) I earned a 4.0 GPA in my mathematics courses, which included Calculus 1, 2, and 3, Differential Equations, and a graduate level Foundations of Real Analysis.

Calculus AP Tutoring

As a high school teacher, I taught AP Calculus AB for 2 school years, and attended a 30 hour educator training dedicated to AP Calculus AB which was written and presented by the College Board - the organization that writes the AP exams.

Geometry Tutoring

During my time as a high school math teacher, I taught geometry for 2 school years. I also taught a geometry course during summer school one year.

Calculus I Tutoring

As a high school teacher, I taught AP Calculus AB for 2 school years, and attended a 30 hour educator training dedicated to AP Calculus AB which was written and presented by the College Board - the organization that writes the AP exams.

Pre Calculus Tutoring

As a high school teacher, I taught an Pre-Calculus course for 3 years, (both regular and Pre-AP sections), and it's my favorite course to teach.

Trigonometry Tutoring

Trigonometry is one of the few math topics that I remember struggling with when I was in high school. Because of that, it's one of topics I'm most passionate about teaching well.

I had the opportunity to apply that enthusiasm to figuring out what works during the 3 years that I taught high school Pre-Calculus (regular and Pre-AP), since almost the entire 2nd semester is trigonometry content.

College Algebra Tutoring

I've tutored multiple College Algebra students, many of which were returning to college after a long break from school, and struggling to remember a lot of math that they used to understand. All of my students made great gains in homework and test scores.
