Fun Facts

I love to try new things! I have done a strange array of things in my life: served in the Army, played Roller Derby, competed in Sprint Triathlons, Skydived, Ziplines, and Snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef. I have 4 kids, 2 boys in High School and 2 girls in Elementary. I also have 3 dogs, so life is busy. I currently also teach Hot Yoga.

About Me

I was an Elementary teacher for 6 years. And currently hold a teaching certificate in the State of Texas. I wanted something different than a traditional school day. I realized I like the connection of smaller groups and being able to connect with students 1 on 1 to help them reach their full capability.

Experience

I have taught in Texas for 6 years in 2-4th grade, and one year of that was as a math-only teacher for 4th and 5th. I am friendly and easy to connect with. I love getting to know how each child's brain works to help them reach that "aha" moment. Math is my favorite subject to teach even though I did not like math when I was in Elementary school. Once I became a teacher and learned different strategies and "tricks" it made math much more fun and I love getting students to also see math as fun.

Approach

It all starts with a personal connection. Students need to know that you care and are there to help them. There are many strategies to use, it's about finding one that works for them. Many times the students have to work with one particular strategy and show that they know how to use it. In that case, I will explain how the strategy relates to one that they do know and have conversations with them to find out where the confusion is.
