Fun Facts
I do not know if this is "fun" (in this "fun"-oriented culture), but the love of and search for truth is what I am about. This, coupled with virtue (that Classical Greek idea) - doing the best you are able - makes a fine person, and all my academic activities are founded on these precepts.
About Me
I received my Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Florida in 1988, concentrating on political philosophy, logic, the history of philosophy, and philosophy of education. My Master's in Political Science is from connecticut-state-university">Southern Connecticut State University and my Bachelor's from Johns Hopkins University. Current research interests include but are not limited to autonomous systems, states of life, and artificial consciousness, with an emphasis on dynamic validation.
I am president emeritus of the Southwest Area Meeting (division) of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Professional associations - past and present - include the International Institute for Informatics and Systemics, the International Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Bioelectromagnetics Society.
Peer-reviewed published works include two books (one in logic, the other in social philosophy) and numerous papers in philosophy. My ORCID ID: 0000-0002-9179-0815. More about me can be found under the search term “Jeremy Horne Ph.D.".
Experience
Too many years in academia (teaching, research, writing, and tutoring) have gone by for me to count, but I am estimating 40. All you need to do is look at my curriculum vitae. If you cannot find it on the Internet, I can forward a copy to you.
Approach
Two main pedagogical theories are those of Plato (see his Meno) and the "fill a container with knowledge". The first is the Socratic approach, teasing out of a person what they inherently know by questioning. The second is assuming the person's knowledge "container" is empty, the tutor/teacher filling it. Mine is a mixture, "filling" the container with what neurophysiologists have found as emerging brain capacities to "process" information. Complex? Yes, but that is what I am about - to enhance
