Fun Facts
I had a VERY hard time learning from Kindergarten through third grade when I finally got glasses. So I can identify with children who have a hard time learning. I specialize in helping children enjoy learning, especially in First, Second, and Third Grades. But I also help children and adults learn Spanish or ESL (English as a Second Language). I do my best to make the learning fun.
About Me
I first moved to this area from some equatorial Pacific islands in 1981. I have lived all over this country, but my heart is here in the Mid-South. I love helping children learn English (especially Phonics), and I strive to make the learning fun for them.
Experience
My first job was volunteering as a Tutor with the Dyslexia Foundation of Memphis. They told me I was gifted, so I started tutoring for real money soon after my sister graduated from their program. In 2011, I started tutoring online, and I served as an Educational Consultant in Tennessee, Wyoming, and California.
I just moved back from Los Angeles, where I was tutoring in a local middle school (mostly Math and Science... in both Spanish and English).
Approach
I always prefer to use interactive websites to teach Phonics lessons and even for drilling Math, like Multiplication Facts. When a student is using the mouse and keyboard, seeing moving cartoons, and hearing music or sound effects, they are learning with more of the brain than when I and the student are just writing and talking. I like to see my students enjoying the lessons, with my help and encouragement.
