Fun Facts
I am passionate about wildflowers and native plants. I'm also an avid hiker and am always on the lookout for something biologically intriguing on the trail - whether fungi, insects, plants, or animals.
About Me
I am a naturalist, ecologist, and educational mentor on cultivating environmental literacy, climate change awareness, and reconnecting people to the native ecosystems where they live. I am bilingual, multi-cultural and study Hawaiian culture and ethnobotany as a model for sustainable community development.
Experience
I am currently a certified teacher in Biology (030) and Agricultural Sciences (043) in the State of Connecticut. For the past 7 years, I have been a high school biology and science teacher, leading students on learning adventures from stream ecology studies to microbiological analysis of compost piles. Before becoming a teacher, I was an Environmental Scientist with a company called Lynker on Hawai'i Island where I was a ecological restoration project coordinator.
Approach
I believe every student can learn and master new skill sets and applied information. Identifying and working with a person's natural learning tendencies (visual, kinesthetic, active learning, auditory, etc) makes the educational process fun and engaging, and the student more likely to retain key information. As a certified teacher, I make sure my students feel supported and safe to ask questions, take academic risks, and believe in themselves!
