Fun Facts
My daughter Emily was one of five kids in a full length feature film called The Five. It was filmed during the summer before she started 6th grade and it was REALLY hard work. She will be the first one to tell you that it is a BAD movie...terrible...awful! This experience erased any desire that she might have had to continue acting in film, lol.
About Me
I am currently working with high school students and their families, helping them to navigate the confusing process of choosing and applying to a college. I use my writing skills to help students with admissions essays and I help the parents on completing the FAFSA application. I am happy to answer questions about college admissions if you have any. I have a wicked sense of humor that is admittedly pretty corny....think "Dad jokes" only without the Dad.
Experience
I have spent most of my career in college academic advising. I am very proud of the work that I do, especially when I'm working with students who are at risk in some way...those on academic probation, students with disabilities, and students who are the first generation in their families to go to college. I am a published author with several writing awards to my name. I can help students of all ages to better understand reading and writing, and some might admit it's actually fun.
Approach
I am very easygoing and I can usually build rapport with students early on in their chosen academic programs. I use a variety of ways to show my students that they can trust me and that I will "have their back." Students usually respond well to my sense of humor, my open mind, and my commitment to diversity and inclusion. Finally, I ask all of my students to be 100% truthful with me about anything that comes up, so that I can best help them to be successful in college and beyond.

English Tutoring
I studied AP English in high school and as part of my Bachelor's degree program. I use my English proficiency in my stories, essays and poetry. I have tutored English for students of all ages for many years in my academic career. It is a fun language to study, and I hope to get the chance to help you in your English classes.
Sociology Tutoring
I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Communications and Sociology. I have tutored Sociology for many years, at many different colleges. It is one of my favorite subjects because it is the study of groups in society. It delves into issues around culture, race, ability level, gender issues and each of the other categories of people in our society. Today's social issues and challenges make the study of Sociology a fascinating one.
Writing Tutoring
My first published writing award was for a poem I wrote in elementary school and my love for the craft continues to this day I took advanced writing classes in high school and college, which led me to a wide variety of copyrighting, editing, proofreading, and tutoring jobs. I have even written a rap for an online University to use in its marketing!
Homework Coach Tutoring
I am always amazed at my students who need some help with their homework. I often find that once the student has had time and a bit of guidance, they are back on their feet and ready to roll. Along with helping with homework, I work with you on some study skills, time management and communications. It's always amazed me about how my students start to use some of my input and they find that their grades are improving and homework is a bit easier.
Study Skills Tutoring
I created and taught a study skills workshop at Johnson & Wales University called Brain Food. We covered time management, study skills, mind-mapping and then writing a paper. We practiced good ways to deal with conflict and how to move past the issue to a good resolution. We even tackled financial literacy. I taught this program once it became a for-credit class, so I feel confident that I can help you with this subject.
Communication Tutoring
I graduated from the University of Denver with my Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Communications. The Communications curriculum includes a wide number of contexts that play a crucial role in the world around us. There is Mass Communications, Speech Communications, Cross-Cultural Interactions, Ethical & Effective Community Connections and Interpersonal Interactions, to name a few. Especially considering the world in which we now live, we need solid communicators, those who are brave enough to try to stem the tide of current conflicts, both at home and around the world. I would like to have the opportunity to help you discover new capabilities and tools for connecting with the people in your life, both now and in the future.
Microsoft Word Tutoring
I have taught workshops for students of all ages in Microsoft Word. It is my mission to erase a lot of the frustration that comes with not having proficiency in Word. There are some shortcuts that are easy to remember and they will make you feel confident in your Word skills.
Basic Computer Skills Tutoring
I work at my local public library, assisting people with these basic computer skills. I often tutor an older student (like a grandparent) and then an elementary or middle school student arrives and joins in. It's awesome because they really help each other to explore how to use the day's lesson.
Reading Tutoring
My first experience with as a reading coach was very challenging and I learned a lot. Adults are different when it comes to learning how to read. Often there is some stigma and embarrassment for the student who is learning to read.
I let them know that they can leave those unwanted guests outside...they don't belong in my tutoring sessions. I hope to get the opportunity to help you!
