Fun Facts
I am an athlete at heart. I love to exercise; running, Pilates, and weight lifting are my go-to's. I was a competitive springboard and platform diver in high school and college. As an adult, I became addicted to running. I have run one marathon race, several half-marathons, and multiple 5Ks, 10Ks, and 12Ks. I'm not fast, but I run for the joy it brings me.
About Me
I am a wife, mother to three young adults, and a part-time teacher at Tarrant County College. I love to read, spend time with my family, and go on long walks. I love animals and have a dog and a cat. I have my master's degree in journalism, and when my children were young, I freelanced at various newspapers and magazines. I volunteered in the classroom while my children were at school and pursued my teaching career in 2015.
Experience
I have taught reading comprehension, writing, and literature at Tarrant County College for the past six years. Before my teaching career, when my three kids were young, I did freelance writing. I wrote multiple articles for various newspapers, magazines, and online startups. I also volunteered at my kid's school in the writing lab, reading lab, math lab, and computer lab.
Approach
I believe everyone can improve and grow in their reading and writing abilities. I like to engage students in the process, scaffold large projects, and break them down into bite-size pieces. I want students to become active readers, ask questions, and decipher the 'why' behind the text: Why did the author write this? Why did he/she choose the audience he/she did? What is the purpose, and how does that help us understand the content better? I want my students to succeed in their academic pursuits.
