Fun Facts

In my spare time, I play guitar and dabble in songwriting. I'm also a big hockey fan, and my favourite team is the Chicago Blackhawks. I also love to snowboard with my son whenever time allows. I'm a physically active person who also has a very active mind.

About Me

After I earned my bachelor's degree, I spent some years exploring the idea of writing for a living, first as a freelancer, and then as a newsroom reporter for a small business newspaper. I then spent nearly 10 years working as a reporter/writer in the media, covering a wide range of topics, including business, health, gaming, sports, entrepreneurship, and more. I have interviewed high-profile executives, celebrities and everyday folks with stories published in media outlets like Forbes, USA Today and major daily newspapers around the country. Currently, I still write some articles, but am more focused on using my skills to help businesses. I write website copy, emails, blogs, and even pitches to help them get media exposure for their brand.

In 2013, I was allowed to teach an introductory journalism class at a state college. I also helped to oversee the school newspaper. Coaching developing writers was a rewarding experience that helped me to learn how much of my day-to-day work as a professional writer had become automatic to me. I needed to force myself to step back and empathize with the plight of developing writers.

I learned very quickly that writers often feel overwhelmed, so much so that they can't create a structure and focus. Settling down the mind to focus on the audience and the desired goal of the piece can help to overcome this problem. Once you can create structure and focus and leave space for some messy drafts, then you can start to shape a narrative. It takes drafts. It takes time and repetition, and you get better at writing by doing more of it, regardless of whether it's a persuasive email, essay or poem. The process of learning to write effectively frustrates even the sharpest minds, but once a person can learn to communicate a message or concept, you can see their confidence build in all areas of their life. It's gratifying to see.

Experience

I have more than two decades of experience as a journalist, copywriter and editor
I also have two years of college-level experience where I coached and developed media writers

Approach

If you were to speak with my past teachers and professors, they would probably tell you "Brian became a math teacher or engineer." I have a strong math mind, but I'm fascinated with how effective communication (or the lack thereof) can shape an individual's future.

My father had a fifth-grade education and my mother completed nursing school. Both were immigrants. One committed to learning effective communication, the other didn't. In my father, I always saw a man who struggled to be
