Fun Facts

I love hiking! I've lived in the Pacific Northwest my whole life and I have walked/run/scrambled thousands of miles on (and off) trails throughout the region. On the weekends, the maryland/columbia">columbia">maryland/columbia">Columbia River Gorge is my go-to place to hit the trail, but when I have more time I like to head east to places like Steens Mountain or the Blues. In the 2012-2013 I traveled throughout Chile and Argentina and had the opportunity to hike all over Patagonia!

About Me

I am a post-bac at portland-state-university">Portland State University studying science/california/san-jose">Computer Science (my first degree was a BA in Physics form Reed College). My ultimate goal is to work as software engineer.

Experience

I started tutoring over 8 years ago while I was attending Reed College. There I worked at the Science Center helping students with their 100 and 200 level Physics courses. After graduation I continued to tutor (this time through an agency) primarily high school Math and Physics. In 2010 I had the opportunity to work with immigrant students at a local high school. I was an after school tutor there for 2 years and it was a great experience working with such a diversity of students!

Approach

When I first meet a student, I ask them to step back and try to identify where they are in a subject and what they think they need help with. From there we can work on a plan to accomplish their learning goals. In general during a session, I like to go over assignments and do some portion of a students homework with them. The larger concepts come up in this context and helps me see where they are having difficulty. I want students to learn patience for themselves but persistence in effort!
