About Me
I'm a twenty-year-old originally from New Orleans, but after three years, Chicago is definitely home sweet home! I am currently double-majoring in English and Secondary Education at chicago">Loyola University Chicago and minoring in ESL Education. I'd love to be teaching middle or high school English Literature in either Chicago or New York City after I graduate. I have a great love for all animals, most tea, accents of any kind, and warm weather.
I've tutored quite a bit before. From August of 2010 to June of 2011, I worked as a chicago">tutor for ESL Middle School Boys at Asian Human Services, a nonprofit in Chicago. We worked on reading level, fluency, and comprehension and well as writing, spelling, and grammar. From July of 2010 to April of 2011, I coordinated the Evening chicago">Tutoring Program at Family Matters, another nonprofit in the city. I helped design lessons and activities for chicago">tutor-student pairs ages 7-17. I also worked with several students in Family Matters' IRead Program, which aims to help struggling readers. I tutored four students, 2nd-7th grade, in reading and writing skills.
My approach to chicago">tutoring is that it should be both fun and productive. Students are often tired after school--and I don't blame them! Why would they want to sit in a desk and be talked at for MORE time AFTER school? I think chicago">tutoring should be a time where the student is actively engaged and participating, whether that's by games, activities, etc. chicago">Tutoring should be focused on the individual student, their needs, and what they like!
