Fun Facts
I once taught English on Weno Island in Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia. I love travel and have a background teaching geography, history, earth sciences, and gardening in addition to English.
About Me
I'm a fiction writer and part-time employee of a literary journal and a master's degree in British Literature. With experience in journalism, teaching, and editing, I have diverse knowledge of different styles and forms that go beyond typical classroom instruction.
Experience
I have eight years of teaching experience in grades 6-12 and an additional two years' experience brooklyn">tutoring students of all ages. From Micronesia to Michigan, the Bronx to Brooklyn, I've worked with a wide range of students with differing abilities and interests. While the majority of my experience involves students in grades 6 through 12, I've also worked one on one with both elementary and high school students.
Approach
I realize that English literature, reading, and grammar are not easy for everyone. Every adult can remember someone who ruined a subject for them. For me, it was my sophomore year math teacher. But I was lucky enough to have a teacher senior year who made it his business not just to get me to memorize information, but to get to love math again--and he almost succeeded! He did manage to model for me the love of learning and concern for individuals, which I strive to replicate in my own teaching.

In my master's degree, I specialized in High Modernism, taking courses and producing papers on Joyce, Wilde, among others. I also have taken quite a few courses in Victorian literature and, as an undergrad, specialized in the works of the Godwin and Shelley families.

I've created curricula for several English Literature courses and have taught a variety of classic texts such as Huckleberry Finn, Native Son, The Catcher in the Rye, many works by Shakespeare, and Toni Morrison, among others.

Along with my eight years' experience teaching high school and middle school students, I have led study skills programs while employed at two schools with extended-day programs.
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
As a master English teacher and director of literacy, I helped shape the curricula for middle school students at my former school using materials from well-known reading programs such as the Columbia Teachers' College Reading and Writing Workshop and Renaissance Learning. I have tested many different methods of reading instruction that have assisted with students learning English as a second language as well as students with higher than average ability in reading.
