Fun Facts
I am a New Mexico native, and the only other place I have ever lived was when I studied in Vermont for a year. It was such a big difference; I loved the greenery and the snow, and I look forward to being able to visit again someday! Luckily for me, I have a very versatile hobby that can be performed anywhere: reading. No matter where you find me, I will always have a book stashed away in my bag.
About Me
I am currently a second-year graduate student at New Mexico State University. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English in May 2013. I graduated with High Honors with a GPA of 4.0 and four years as a Crimson Scholar. I will be receiving my Master of Arts in English in May 2015, with a current GPA of 3.966. I hope to one day attend a Ph.D. program in Literature.
Experience
While working on my Master's degree, I was hired as a Graduate Assistance. My duties included teaching a section of my university's first-year writing course, English 111, each semester. In addition to teaching, I also spent four hours per week working at New Mexico State University's Writing Center. We helped undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty from across the campus with all types of writing assignments and projects.
Approach
In both my larger-scale classroom environment and in one-on-one tutoring, I have found that my students' time is best spent when I provide them with the tools to answer their own questions and solve their own problems when I'm not around. In the Writing Center, I like to go over a few pages with my client in great depth so that we can note some patterns in the mistakes being made - both small scale grammar and larger scale content. That way, once the client gets home they know what to look for.
Request Me NowEnglish Tutoring
In addition to earning both Bachelors and Masters degrees in English over the last six years, I also have taught two sections of English 111 at New Mexico State University. In my classes, we discuss rhetoric and composition, and my students write several major papers and many smaller written assignments. In addition to teaching this course, I work with students from all levels of English department courses in the Writing Center, giving me exposure to the various kinds of assignments required across the department.
Literature Tutoring
Both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees are in English, but my concentration in both of them is also Literature. My department requires a variety of courses, and I have excelled across the board at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Classes I have taken include: Chaucer, Milton, multiple Shakespeare and Elizabethan courses, Victorian era courses, Modern and Contemporary fiction and poetry, and Romantic and Gothic novels.
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
In my ENGL 111 courses, I like to start with a unit on critical reading. We spend time thinking about what an author says as well as how that meaning is created through language. Additionally, because of the demographics of the area, I often work with English Language Learners in the Writing Center at NMSU.
Writing Tutoring
One of the two major goals in the English class I teach is composition. In my class, we emphasize analysis and argument in two major papers. The course culminates in a final paper that is a research-based argument, and I guide my students through every step in the process. I also work in the NMSU Writing Center every week where I work with students performing all kinds of writing tasks to help them wherever they feel they need it most.
Writing Advance Tutoring
At the NMSU Writing Center, I have had the opportunity to work with various other graduate students from across the campus. I have worked with students earning Doctorate degrees in Computer Science, Masters degrees in Plant and Environmental Science, and many in between. This is, of course, in addition to the writing I do for my own Masters program; between that degree and my Bachelors, I have been writing academic papers non-stop for six years!
AP English Tutoring
When I took AP English in High School, I earned a 4 on the exam. It was actually because of that class that I went on to become an English major for my undergraduate and graduate degrees in college, so my skills in this area have only improved since I took the class. My current position requires that I teach English and tutor Writing.
ACT English Tutoring
I took the ACT twice while in high school, and both times my highest subject score was in English. I scored 34 twice, likely because of my long-time interest in reading and writing. I was also taking AP English while in high school and went on to become an English major for both my Bachelors and Masters degrees. Since I took the ACT, my skills have only improved.
ACT Reading Tutoring
I took the ACT twice while in high school, and I earned Reading scores of 30 and 32. I have always had a passion for reading, and that passion turned into an academic career pathway when I became an English major in college. I am now at the Masters level earning my degree in English.
