Fun Facts

I love hiking, biking, and pretty much anything that keeps me on my feet. When I'm not playing the piano or working on my astrophysics research, you can find me in my backyard with my telescope or hiking Mount Tabor. I also love solving puzzles, reading, gardening, watching classic movies, and practicing yoga. Check out my personal website, http://www.egrace.me :)

About Me

I recently graduated from Reed College with a BA in Physics, and I will be starting my physics PhD in the fall at Georgia Tech. Last summer, I worked on neutrino physics at maryland/columbia">columbia">maryland/columbia">Columbia, and the summer before that, I worked on nanofabrication at UNM. I also worked as a nuclear reactor operator for three years. I'm currently doing part time post-baccalaureate astrophysics research on nebulae. My SAT score was 2290/2400, and I scored above the maximum on the CSQ (similar to IQ).

Experience

This past year, I had the opportunity to atlanta">tutor middle school students in mathematics. I noticed that the teachers would sometimes pass up opportunities to bring in really cool math, like fractals, at an approachable level. Math and physics can be very relatable subjects if you know your audience!

Approach

I love working with students! Since I am a recent college graduate, and have been a student for most of my life, I have the benefit of being able to relate to students at many ages. I have a clear and approachable communication style, even when dealing with complex ideas in quantum mechanics or chaos. I also strongly believe in the ability of women and girls to be successful scientists and mathematicians. :)

Mathematica Tutoring

I've been working with Mathematica for three years. I took a course entirely in Mathematica called Scientific Computing. My final project was a simulation of the quantum mechanics and electrodynamics of two particles interacting in a finite 1-dimensional potential well. I realized the problem was equivalent to one particle in a two-dimensional well. I used Crank-Nicholson methods to break down the two-dimensional Schrodinger equation into a workable solution. My project report is available on request. I also learned about a wide variety of other methods.
