Fun Facts
Although I now teach college English and writing, I spend fifteen years as a professional cook. I still enjoy the challenge of a new recipe. My husband and I share our home with our two cats, Maggie and Tony, who go by the nicknames Pickles and Fudge. I have lived in almost every New England state (in addition to New York and North Carolina), and I have traveled to eleven countries on four different continents.
About Me
I am an instructor of English literature and college writing, and a doctoral student at University of Rhode Island. I am also a writing providence">tutor in the summers for the University's Talent Development program to aid students with limited access and resources as they transition to college. I have a 4.0 GPA, and have received academic awards for academics. I moderate a writing group for graduate students, and am the co-chair of our graduate professionalization committee in the English Department.
Experience
As a writing instructor I guide classes through the writing process: invention (brainstorming), planning (outlining, etc.), writing research questions and thesis statements, doing research, drafting, revision, and editing. I Lecture, lead full-class activities, facilitate small group-work, and meet with each of my students several times a semester one-on-one for individual help with their projects, which I also do as a providence">tutor. As an English instructor, I teach content, analysis, and close reading
Approach
As some one who really struggled with traditional teaching methods when. I was a student, I try to break down large tasks into smaller more manageable ones for my students and always model before they practice. I use a dialogic approach to my providence">tutoring. This involves asking the students questions designed to help them find their own answers. If they seem really stuck, I turn to a model through which we identify the parts or steps needed together.
