Fun Facts
I am a huge graphic novel and YA fan. As a middle school teacher, this was helpful as it allowed me to have many conversations with students about the literature that interested them, and it also allowed me to find reluctant or struggling readers books that they would enjoy. One of my favorite YA authors is Rick Riordan, writer of the Percy Jackson series and Kane Chronicles. He is exceptionally good at finding a way to blend the everyday issues of adolescents with larger-than life heroes.
About Me
I am a middle school science (and former social studies teacher), and I have recently moved to Washington D.C. I have a master's degree in Elementary Education, and a dual bachelor's degree in Geology and English.
Experience
I have been a middle school teacher for the past three years. During this time, I worked as an English, Social Studies and primarily science teacher. Before that, I worked as a washington-dc">tutor for writing and college-essay help for ESL and ELL students, and college-aged and graduate students.
Approach
I studied English and Geology in college because I wanted to find a way to communicate scientific ideas across disciplines. Science never came to me naturally, and it took a lot of work to learn how to study for it. When I started washington-dc">tutoring in undergraduate, I began to use the techniques I developed on my own to help me reach others; became a teacher because of this desire to help others translate what was difficult to them in order to find success, and this has been my greatest passion since.

I have designed and executed novel curricula for life sciences for grades 4-8.
English Tutoring
I have designed and executed curriculum for 8th grade, and have also provided individualized phonics courses for struggling readers in grade 6. In all cases, my student's Lexile scores increased by at least one grade level.
Reading Comprehension Tutoring
In my experience as a middle school teacher, I have taught and worked with ELA/ELL students, and have also worked to provide individualized phonics instruction for 6th graders.
Science Tutoring
For the past three years, I have designed and used standards-based curricula for grades 6-8 in Physics, Life Science, and Earth/Space science. I have taught science for grades 4-8.
Study Skills Tutoring
In the past three years, I have worked with students that needed additional executive functioning help and study skills. I have served as a sixth grade homeroom teacher for 3 years now, which is a difficult period of transition for students out of elementary.
Writing Tutoring
In addition to the work I have done as a middle school teacher, I also provided help for college essay writing for ELL/ESL students and undergraduate and graduate students.
Homework Coach Tutoring
I have worked as an after-school student for grades 4-8 to provide additional homework support in English, science, social studies and math.
Elementary Math Tutoring
I have worked as an after-school student for grades 4-8 to provide additional homework support in English, science, social studies and math.
Social Studies Tutoring
I have worked as a social studies teacher for grades 5 and 6.
