Fun Facts

I come from Ukraine, where I lived for seventeen years, and I speak five languages: fluent Ukrainian, Russian, and English, advanced French, and intermediate Spanish. However, I get rusty because I do not use all of them every day! My biggest passion is writing, and this is a skill I hope to pass on regardless of what I am tutoring. Besides academics, I also love dance, particularly ballet, though I am definitely better at watching than performing.

About Me

I am a sophomore at Columbia University hoping to study comparative literature. I enjoy reading anything from French novels to Russian poetry, so I bet we will find something in common. Within my major, I also take classes in many fields from history to science, trying to untangle the mystery of human nature. My life has, in a way, informed this choice: after coming to the States from Ukraine, I met with such incredible diversity, that it has become my biggest wonder and academic passion!

Experience

I started volunteering as a junior in high school, working with elementary school students in Connecticut. I also tutored English to a native Spanish speaker from Peru. Later, in college, I volunteered for Let's Get Ready, teaching verbal SAT to first-generation high school students in the Bronx. Finally, this summer, I taught ESL to college students in my native country, Ukraine. So, I have had some teaching experience with all ages, and they are all fun to work with, in different ways!

Approach

From experience, students often struggle to connect academics to real life. My favorite teachers at school were those who brought fresh news articles or told anecdotes related to our topic of study, thus giving a sense of purpose to my education. As a tutor, I will do my best to make studying meaningful and interesting. I also think that it is important to recognize students' strengths. Knowing that they are gifted in one thing will give them confidence to excel in others.
