As an avid writer and reader, I have great passion for literacy. I'm originally from Wisconsin and have also lived in Dallas, TX. Huge sports fan as well.

About Me

Currently, I am a Master of Arts candidate in English New York University.

Experience

As a former Teach For America Corps Member in the Dallas-Fort Worth Region from 2013-2015, I taught sixth grade Language Arts and Reading at J.L Long Middle School. I was incredibly effective during my time there--outscoring the district on state tests regularly. My students averaged 2.1 years of reading growth during the 2014-15 school year.

Other experiences related to literacy include serving as an editor and writer for both college literary journals and newspapers.

Approach

As an instructor in Dallas, I primarily served students of low-income backgrounds who were often at least two years behind grade-level in reading and writing. Through patience, diligence, and strong relationship-building, I was able to facilitate impactful growth and development among my students-catching them up and pushing them past grade level expectations. Every day, I made sure to bring enthusiasm and love for the content I taught. As tutor, none of these things will change for me.

As current graduate student who finished undergrad with a 3.9 GPA, I have developed a systematic approach to my studies to ensure success. As a teacher, I was also able to develop these study skills in my students, so I feel that I can help a college student create a plan of action to improve their study habits.

AP English Tutoring

I am a graduate student in English at NYU and someone who studied English in undergrad (finishing with honors in the major, a 3.9 GPA, and a senior thesis that was published). Because of this and my experience teaching Reading and Language Arts from 2013-2015, I believe that I can offer a lot of support to an AP English student. I also took AP English when I was in high school, so I can certainly work with them on test prep.

Reading Comprehension Tutoring

I taught middle school Reading and Language Arts from 2013-2015. During the 2014-2015 school year, my students experienced an average of 2.1 years of reading level growth according to the nationally accepted Gates-McGinitie Reading Assessment. Consequently, I have a history of experiencing great success in reading comprehension growth amongst the middle school age. Nonetheless, I feel like many of those instructional skills transfer to both younger and older age groups.

I've written all sorts of genres from journalistic writing, to academic thesis oriented writing, to press releases, to fiction. Moreover, I've had my writing published in all of these genres of writing with the exception of fiction. So, I'm a very experienced writing, who's also had experience teaching writing to a middle school audience for the previous two years.

Microsoft PowerPoint Tutoring

As Language Arts and Reading teacher, incorporating effectual visuals through Powerpoint was a huge skill I developed. I had a powerpoint presentation each day to help guide my students through the daily lesson plan and keep them engaged and responsive. I can teach not only the technical usage of this application, but can also offer tips on shaping the content of your powerpoint to maximize the efficacy of your presentation.

As a writer of various mediums, I have very strong experience in using Word. Whether it's figuring how best to use header, footers, incorporate footnotes, indent pull quotations, etc, I can be of service to show you how Word works and how best to format your Word document.
