Fun Facts
If I 'm not reading or writing, I'm most likely watching sports. I simply cannot watch enough football, basketball, track and field, tennis, etc. Blame my small town upbringing. Every sunny day, especially during summers in Mississippi, my siblings, cousins, and friends would spend hours outside playing whatever sport our numbers allowed. Since we're all much older now, exhaustive watching has replaced energetic play.
About Me
It's my first year at the University of Missouri-Kansas City as a Durwood Creative Writing Scholar, and I'm pursuing an MFA in Poetry. Before I moved to Kansas City, I earned my Masters in English from Mississippi State University (MSU). My goal is teach Creative Writing and Composition at the collegiate level while gaining publication in the nation's best literary journals.
Experience
Before I earned my Masters in English, I taught English at Columbus High School in Columbus, MS. During my eight years there, I had the privilege of teaching hundreds of students from ninth graders to Advanced Placement juniors to International Baccalaureate seniors the nuanced skills of literary comprehension and analysis. While earning my Masters from MSU, I taught three levels of freshman composition, and tutored all manner of writing in university's Writing Center.
Approach
The best teachers in my academic career never gave the answers outright, but demanded that students engage and contribute to their own learning. As such, my tutoring philosophy is based on active listening and effective questioning. It is not my job to superimpose my thoughts or opinions onto a student's work. It is my job to understand the intent of the assignment, make sure that the student is on task, and assist them in the awesome exercise of discovery through writing.

I have taught Basic Composition, Composition I, Composition II, and Introduction to Creative Writing at the collegiate levels and earned the respect of my colleagues and supervisors for my skill at providing relevant feedback and making difficult course material accessible. As a graduate student I maintained a 3.6 GPA and took courses that expanded my knowledge of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Post-Colonial South African Literature, American Literature, and Literature of the American South. I am steeped in writing ability as each of my degrees is concentrated on writing. Moreover, as a writer I know the painstaking effort that the construction and instruction of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction demand. I am not only a teacher, but I am a doer of the word.
