About Me
I am a businesswoman who enjoys managing small business, including a non-profit company I founded that promotes clean energy. I love the outdoors, camping, hiking and kayaking. I loved raising our 2 children, and I'm really looking forward to being a grandmother.
I taught my 2 children through elementary school for 8 years. During that time, I organized and taught classes for homeschooled kids in art, creative writing, and darkroom techniques. I loved the one-on-one opportunity afforded by homeschooling because it takes all the logistics out of the education equation and gives the student more time to pursue their interests. I also discovered that I love to teach, guiding students to make their own discoveries.
I feel that it's very important to gauge the student's level of understanding and start there before tackling the material. That way, the student starts the session feeling confident. I also like to find out what their learning style is, and use that to teach and memorize. I firmly believe that learning is fun and every student can enjoy gaining knowledge and skills!

Experience
I began homeschooling our children out of necessity, as we wanted them to be able to travel with us. I discovered that I love teaching. Before long, I was organizing classes of homeschool students for science, art, music and history. I continued teaching them until they entered high school. They were able to travel to Europe and Russia with us, gaining valuable cultural experiences. I enjoyed tutoring refugees one-on-one who were relocated to my city. These classes were all adults.
Approach
I remember being bored most of the time in school, waiting for the class to finish. This impression stayed with me, and when I became a parent, I felt strongly about helping our children become lifelong learners. If they understand HOW to learn, they can learn anything. So, I think it's more valuable to guide students into discovering principles, using a multi-sensory approach. That way, the student gains confidence in their own ability, and variety keeps study from becoming stale.
